Is it possible to be allergic to fish oil although I'm not aware of having a fish allergy?

I started taking fish oil supplements this week and have developed a rash on my chest and forearms. Since it was the only change in my diet, I'm assuming that's what caused it, but I could be wrong. I have never had any kind of allergic reaction to eating fish. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks

Liz

Yes, I have experience with this. For me it became progressively worse. I like what the person said about Mercury. In fact every one had good suggestions. My Dr. said my tests showed an allergy to the white fish family, put salmon was not included in that family and suggested that I eat that instead. Though salmon oil is more expensive, many claim that it is more effective than fish oil. Omega 3 is these three, oils from fish, flax & evening primrose.anybody can develope an allergy to anything
you can be allergic to anything and people can develope allergies at anytime . i sujest you stop taking the supplement and see if the rash disapears, talk to your doc and get testing done. some allergic reactions can be serious and even fatal(i dont think yours is)

Yes,
And it is possible that the fish oil supplements contain trace elements of mercury.
Some herbal supplement suppliers are not very reputable. I don't know what kind/brand you have , but if I were taking a supplement product especially one that could possibly be tainted, I would ONLY purchase from a VERY well trusted and reputable company and would do a LOT of research on other peoples experiences with that company.
You should probably not take them any more and see if the rash goes away, and maybe call a Dr.
Hope this helps.
you may not be allergic to fish per se.... but have a sensitivity to the fish oil in this concentrated form . a true allergic reaction happens within two hours of ingesting the item... and some people are allergic to peanut butter but can eat other things with peanut in them...same as with fish you may have no problem with eating fish but not be able to eat shellfish or the fish oil...
