Is there an easy way to diagnose an unknown food allergy?


A few times I have eaten food my lips swell and burn, my tongue has swelled and this time I had horrible stomach cramps and the corners of my mouth are cracked and red. The problem is that I didn't find any visible common denominator, I ate shellfish this time, last time it was Asian and before that it was some salsa. Will I have to get a million pin pricks in my back or is there an easier way?

The skin prick test is generally safer with fewer side effects than the whole trail and error method. There might not be a single common denominator in what you're allergic to except you, in that you may have a highly sensitive immune system that is reactive to numerous allergens.

The trouble with food allergies is that they can go from mild to fatal in only a couple of exposures. I'd avoid shellfish after having a severe reaction, since the tongue swelling can also end up with your throat swelling and your dying of asphixiation. Carry benadryl so that if you start to have a reaction you can take it to help stop the allergic reaction. You should go to an allergist and get tested, but even your general doctor can prescribe an epipen which you should have in case of an anaphyactic reaction.

The other option is just trying tiny amounts of foods and waiting for a reaction, but this can be a harder way to determine things, since foods normally have a mixture of several things and it can be hard to pin the trigger down.
