Does your dog have allergies? What do you do to help him?

We have a poodle who has pretty bad allergies. He is allergic to grass, mostly fresh cut grass, freshly trimmed trees, and certain plants and flowers. He loves being outside though. Since we moved into the current area we live he has had some trouble with his allergies. He wakes up with flem and seems to have a stuffed up nose because he sniffs so hard. He loves to go outside but when he does he doesn't feel good due to that. He goes to the vet in the morning for it. Any idea what they might do to help him? Dont suggest benedryl we have done that but it knocks him out. So that is no longer an option. This used to be an occaisional thing now its constant. What do you think

It most likely falls under seasonal allergies but he has episodes every season. Mostly when the grass is cut

My Lab suffers from a dust allergy and seasonal allergies, similar to hayfever.
She has monthly immunotherapy injections and also antihistamines., which help to control her seasonal allergies.
She gets a runny nose and watery eyes and sometimes she sneezes.
She needs to take a course of antihistamines for 7-10 days, and they do help.

It sounds like seasonal allergies that are affecting your dog, but the vet will determine if it is, and help to control it.

I would take him to the vet. My dog is allergic to grass and is on prednizone monthly to keep it under control.

the vet should be able to give him something safe... i also bought an air purifier for my home and it has helped dramatically... good luck.

Try a more natural approach. A diet change and a holistic vet would be more helpful to the dog if you dont want to have your dog on meds.
An improper diet can be the cause of the allergies. I don't know what you are feeding him but if his food includes any of the following: Corn, Soy, wheat, rice, oatmeal, barley, try switching to higher quality dog food or a raw diet before using harsh meds.

Higher quality foods:
Evo
Innova
Orijen
Wellness core

Your vet will most likely not agree with a new food, especially if he sells food in his office.

Do not feed any dog foods with Menadione Sodium Bisulfate(Source of Vitamin K Activity) in it.
