Are Samoyeds good for people with allergies?

I want a dog that will not trigger allergies as I have allergies. I read on wikepedia that a Samoyed is good for people with allergies. Is this true? Does anyone own a Samoyed and have allergies?

If they are good dogs for people with allergies, can you please tell me a little bit more about them (care, grooming, obedience). That would be great! Thankyou to everyone. All answers appreciated.

Not really - I think they say that because it's they have hair, not fur. I have an Alaskan Samoyed and he affects my allergies, but since they aren't that severe, I just deal with it. My mother-in-law also lived with us (it was actually her dog) and had bad allergies, but she got allergy shots and was fine.

They are great, friendly, affectionate dogs, but need lots of room to run around and lots of time to play and exercise. They are big and very strong and must be properly trained from early on so they will walk WITH you instead of pulling you around. (We got ours when he was two years old, so it was tough to correct what the previous owner had let slide.) Be sure to control how much he/she eats as they have a tendency of becoming overweight, especially if they don't get enough exercise.

As far as grooming, to keep him clean and neat, we get our Samoyed groomed every three months or so. He spends a lot of time outdoors, so his white fur gets dingy-looking pretty quickly and he's too rambunctious for us to try to bathe him in the tub on our own (and he's afraid of the hose). They usually cut his hair, but the new groomer we took him to sheared him this time instead... and he looks great! His hair is very short and much more manageable (read: doesn't end up all over the house like it usually does), but definitely doesn't look like the same dog - if you like the long-haired look, you won't want it, but we really like the new look (he looks kind of like a white Australian Cattle Dog now, or a smaller, more muscular German Shepherd).

Samoyeds are good for people with allergies. The cause of dog allergies usually isn't the fur. Its the dander which is dead skin cells that flake off the dog. It happens with people, too. Samoyeds shed their dander differently than other breeds and many people with allergies aren't bothered by them. This does not mean they don't shed. Sammies have a thick undercoat and they shed heavily in the spring. If the dog spends a lot of time outside the shedding will be easier to deal with.

dogs period are not good for allergies

That is true.
they are little bast*rds though, when it comes to training and such.

Starred your question for Animal....she will be able to help you

Samoyed'sare Long haired double coated, the undercoat is soft and full of natural lanolin , I suspect this is why they're coat is "more hypo allergenic.. since I dint know what your particular allergies are, I can't say You wont or will be having no reactions, I would suggest You need to experience It for yourself... I have also heard Most folks dint have as big an issue with Sammy fur...
being a cold weather breed when the heat hits they often have weeks of shedding, and you'll find they produce enough clumps of fur to build
Yourself a couple or three dogs... They need brushing daily in this time of year, and well, I have about 15 differant brushes and grooming tools That I use.. The Birds Love to use the clumps as nesting material, the undercoat is so soft..Some might cut the coat in summer
but the undercoat is protection and insulation from the heat..as well as the cold.. sammys often are excavators if left to themselves in the yard, they dig "nests" both in the snow or heat, soits natural for them to dig holes to lie in and they will dig then dig again to get to cooler earth...so expect and anticipate that "problem" sammy's are very pack and people attached They tend to be more people freindly then say siberians or certain other cold weather working dogs because sammy's were traditionally brought up within the family groups rather then just working dogs, But They do have some behaviors That are more wolfish then typical dogish you will tend to see more Potential for pack order domination/and wolf like behaviors Like with siberians and malimutes, akitas, chows which each have differant breed related things yousort get educated , The Sammy is most likely the least agressive of the above list, But the owner has to be aware that sometimes behaviors can pop up that aren't your typical Lab behaviors..lol.... all in all Sammy's are great pets but are a bit more work grooming wise..but on the other hand the fur is easy to deal with unlike coarse coated animals they're fur is light in texture and easy to remove from things ... folks actually find sammy fur easy to weave and often have used the fur to make clothing items...
