What kinds of dogs are okay for people with allergies? |
My daughter is 15 and is outgrowing her alleriges, but she does still have attacks when she's with dogs. I know there are a few that are better for people with allergies. What kind are they? Is a Chow Chow one? Best dogs for those who are allergic are portuguese water dogs. My kids have horrific allergies and they recommended these dogs to us. I'm not sure that yorkies are more allergy friendly than other dogs; I've never seen them advertised as such. However, whatever kind of dog you get, make sure to test out the individual dog with your dad before you commit to taking the dog home. No breed is really universally hypoallergenic. Some breeds bother some people with allergies and not others and the amount of allergens a dog produces can vary even between littermates. Anything cross-bred with poodles are great for people with allergies. Try looking into getting a cockapoo (cocker spaniel and poodle). I have a miniature cp and she's just a ball of lightning. She loves people and I've never once sneezed around her...I probably should have mentioned that I have a slight allergy to ped dander. Wouldn't you know it though...my cat decides to get dander for the first time in a decade now that I'm allergic to it! Anyway, being that everyone is mixing and matching with poodles you shouldn't have any problems finding something cute and cuddly that's friendly and reasonably protective. I don't think that the Chow coat, which is double, like the Collie would be a very good choice as they shed like crazy, but Poodles, Bichon Frise and other breeds with similar coats are said to be good for allergic people because they supposedly don't shed. They actually DO shed, but it isn't as obvious because the hair stays in the coat and matts instead of falling out onto things and doesn't seem to aggravate allergies as much. Since we have a Poodle, I can highly recommend the breed. They are intelligent, fun, playful and very affectionate. However, they DO require regular grooming, either by you or a professional. You can learn to groom at home. We did and our girl looks great!! I found our baby on Petfinder.com. Good luck!!! I actually talked with a vet about this and she told me that although people say that some dogs are allergen free there is really no such thing. She told me that it is because of the skin and dander. I know that some people think that yorkies are good for people with allergies so I suppose if you are set on it you could try it. The reason people have been saying that poodles are a good choice is because they don't actually have fur, they have hair. If the allergy is to fur then poodles could be ok. If your daughter is allergic to the saliva or dander I am not sure that any dog would be a great choice. Looking for a dog that is small and doesn't have too much long fur (hair) would probably be your best choice. Chows have a lot of fur! All dogs will cause allergy attacks though some attacks will be less severe than others. As the first answerer suggested, take your daughter to different breeders or the humane society. Trial and error is the only way to go; NO dog is hypoallergenic. depends on allergy. take her to different breeders and let her interact with the dogs. my niece was allergic and she never had problems with my horses (apps) or my chows. Pit Bulls because they end your allergies fore-ever. i would stick to very short hair dogs that had very little shedding such as weenie dog or taco bell dog...good luck poodles |
