Is it necessary to have a medical alert id for a type 1 shellfish allergy?

I have been aware of my shellfish allergy since I was in elementary school. Recently my grandmother was diagnosed with the same. She was rushed to the hospital for anaphylatic shock. Her allergist recommended that we both get medic alert ids. Since I am young the allergist said if I went into shock I could be misdiagnosed as a drug patient? Is a med id necessary in this situation?

**anaphylactic shock

while it isn't likely that you will ever willingly eat shellfish, it is just possible that you might eat something without knowing it has shellfish or stock made from shellfish in it, and have a reaction. If you have an id, it will tell first responders what the problem is and they will treat you correctly. I have one.

Thanks! I picked one up, an off brand one though. Report Abuse

Any time there is a chance your throat will swell and you will have problems breathing is a time to wear a medic alert bracelet or charm. Ask the allergist if you should carry an Epi pen. You use one of these after you call 911. My husband has just the very slightest chance of anaphylactic shock and he takes Singulair and Zyrtec and carries an Epi pen. He also avoids aspirin and his doctors make sure he isn't given a beta blocker. This sounds like a lot of work but it isn't. If you have a prescription for anything in the future, just tell the pharmacist about your allergy and it will be considered before anything is filled. Also, same for the doctor, dentist. I'd go with the Medic Alert program because they are national, well known, and keep a data base on you.
