I have a severe allergy to shellfish.?

I have a severe allergy to shellfish and I carry my epi pen everywhere with me. I constantly worry that I am accidently going to eat some shellfish and get a severe allergic reaction. is anaphlaxis rare and do I have to worry so much? will an epi pen give me enough time to save my life?

Don't eat shellfish. I don't know how you could possibly, accidentally eat any.

You call 911, then use the epi pen. You could just not ever go to a restaurant with shellfish on the menu because the chef could put down that spoon that turned the shrimp onto your plate (he's not supposed to) or something could get splashed on your food. I've even gotten a shrimp or two with my fries at some fast food restaurants. However, my friend has this allergy, we go to places like Joe's Crab Shack, and she has never had a problem. Anaphlaxis is rare. However, you are more at risk. This is a good basic article: http://kidshealth.org/teen/safety/first_...
The chances of your dying immediately is very small. Both my husband and I carry Epi pens for his allergy. One of the articles says you might want to carry two yourself, but I wouldn't use two unless your doctor or the pharmacist recommends it.

Remember, there are other reactions besides not being able to breathe. You might just break out in a severe rash. Keep carrying the pen, get it replaced yearly (you can sign up for reminders at the Epi site), and don't worry so much. Be vigilant, not worried.

When you eat out always ask what's in the food that you are going to eat/ordering.

Have medic alert bracelet on you AT ALL TIMES saying that you are allergic and have an EpiPen with you in case you colapse, can't speak and/or unable to self-administer the shot.

There are probably millions of people allergic to shellfish.Your best bet would be to shy away from seafood, especially mixed types!
