What are some natural treatments for allergies?

I'm tired of taking a handful of medication that only makes me groggy and doesn't seem to work very well. I know they say to stay indoors when things are blooming, but what else can I do to keep from sneezing the next month away?

Thanks :-)

I have insane allergies right now so I understand where you are coming from!

NetiPot rinse for your nose will get the offending allergens out of your nasal passageway (see link below from LifeHacker) - if done correctly (snorting water correctly is a skill) can be very, very helpful. NYTimes published an article recently that this has actually been shown to work in clinical trials.

I've never had much luck with honey as a cure or aid for relief. Try to call your local reputable health or organic store. If uncertain about your area, Whole Foods Market has some great resources to answer your questions and direct you to local cures.

Masks. You'll look goofy but will be free of misery. You can get these at any drug store. I've given up and started wearing this and it does help; plus, it embarrasses the heck out of my adolescents to be seen with me.

Good luck!

The only natural treatment I've tried, and that worked for me, is something called medinose. I first saw it featured on 'This Morning' once and it uses natural light to desensitize you to triggers. Works for dust allergies, pet allergies and hayfever (and helped my allergic asthma a huge amount too). I still sometimes take a Benadryl on a bad day, but feel so much better without medications.

Also, stay away from freshly cut grass and birch trees just to be doubly safe ;)

Good luck!

I know this takes a couple of weeks to kick in and is not a "natural" remedy but my docs are very strong on pushing nasal sprays. You have to get the prescription kind. Twice a day for a couple of weeks and they will lessen the runny nose and sneezing. I don't think they do much for itchy eyes though.

Another thing my old chiropractor told me was to change my diet. She was very much in favor of natural foods and said our diets have changed more than air quality. I'm beginning to think some of my problems are because of inflammatory foods. Unfortunately my biggest problem with inflammatory food is sugar because I like it in so many foods (mostly chocolate). I know that inflammation is a major problem with high blood pressure, my problem. Anyways, I am trying to cut back.

I would like to suggest taking childerns chewable benedryl tablets at night as they are lower strength and will still work at low dosage with out making you groggy the next day. Dont take any other pills, just honey, cinnemon, and ground licorice root, one spoonful of each mixed together to make a thick glob, swallow this two times a day for two weeks. you will feel better. (I like to chase this with some milk.)

This is your cure, I beleive, because it cured me of horrible sinus/headaches that sent me to bed. I prayed for months for this cure-Jesus Christ is GOOD! Its Oil of Oregano-I take internally full strength in gel cap size 0-buy at health food store or online- take with a few crackers/or 1/2 piece toast--very strong) I take a cap when I feel an attack coming on. My nose might run, and it feels like its trying to come on-but, it can't -this oil keeps it away! and I am NOT in pain or bed-ridden-after years of misery! Claritin and all the prescription medicines and years of expense-didn't help long term. this oil is a miracle! I ordered mine from: Oreganoworld.com. 1 oz for $19-pure wild Mediterean Oil of Oregano, and, for $1-order an empty bottle with dropper. Don't fill the capsule until you are ready to take it-this oil is so strong-it will melt through the capsule! And, also, there is a site called: NOW-that my daughter buys her from (cured her of strep throat)that sells it even cheaper. You can call these very nice people at Oreganoworld.com and they can advise you about this oil. Its the only thing that helped me.

I have heard that local honey, by the spoonful, will help to ward off some allergies that may be affecting you. I think the idea is to ingest some local pollens and you will become desensitized to them...If you're not allergic to honey or bees, you might try that!

If you can get local honey that would be a good help, the honey has all the allergens you are allergic in it and if you eat it slowly it is said that you build a tolerence to the allergens, you need to find out if there are any places around that make their own honey.
