Dry eye or allergies?

Ever since April I have been having discomfort in my eyes. The eyelids get swollen and the eyeballs feel dry and they feel "dirty". I wish I could take them out and rinse them with water and put them back in, LOL.
My regular doctor said it was allergies, but it's two months later and they're getting worse.
Also, my close vision is getting blurred.
Any ideas what this may be? Thank you.

the blurred near vision and the swelling/"dirty" feeling are likely unrelated. both probably warrant a visit to an optometrist.

any swelling of the eyelids...that sounds allergic to me. may need to be on topical antihistamines like the aforementioned patanol. also, there are 2 good OTC topical antihistamines..."alaway" and "zaditor".

"gritty" or "dirty" eyes sounds like dryness. you could try OTC artificial tears like "systane" or the new "optive".

the blurred near vision sounds like possible emerging presbyopia if you are over age 35. if you're under age 35 its probably more complicated (undiagnosed hyperopia, accommodative insufficiency, binocular imbalance, etc etc). would definitely need an eye exam to solve this one.

sounds like you have multiple issues. you could use a visit to the eye doc. Source(s): optometrist

your eyes seem to be getting dry from allergies. the same thing happens to me, definitly get some eyedrops with an antihistamine in it. that should help. :)
it sounds like allergy... ask your doctor for a prescription eyedrops... patanol is really good. although there are over the counter eye drops for allergies but if these kinds don't help you definitely need the prescription ones. your eyes are also prone to infection if you tend to touch/rub your eyes because of you allergies.
go to an eye doctor ,this is not simple as you think [ don't use over the counter , and patanol is excellent but only if you r sure that this is allergy ]
Sounds like allergies to me. Judging by the timing, it is probably hay fever. Depending on what you are allergic will depend on how long this will last. Trees, weeds, grasses, and molds have their own seasons, some of which overlap.

When your eyes feel gritty, you can use artificial tears in your eyes. These can be bought over the counter. Also, there are over the counter and prescription eye drops specifically for allergies.
