We got our 2 cats together when it seemed she had become immune to a friend or ours cat. She is OK during work days but on weekends when she is home all day, she is constantly sneezing and sniffing. She does take prescription Allegra for allergies and we have an air purifier in the bedroom which helps some, but does anybody have experience with allergy shots? How often do you go? How much does it cost? How effective are they? Thanks everyone....I thought about getting her to try Zyrtec next, any other pills work for you?
Allergy shots are effective, but they can take up to two years to even start working and five years to get the maximum benefit. A series of shots can cost $6000. She will have to go to the doctor once per week for 4-5 years then twice a month for a couple of years and once a month for a year or two after that. I recommend a steroidal nasal spray, like Beconase AQ or Nasonex. They really work, but they are prescription only. You need to use a allergy spray on the cats that you can buy at the pet store. Also yes she should already be on allergy shots. If she is allergic to things she should have already been getting allergy shots. Zyrtec may not be better than Allegra for her allergies. She should go in to her allergist and ask him if he has samples of each type of allergy med and then take each for a week at a time to see which works better. Also someone needs to brush the cats daily (outside preferrably) and bathe them routinely. The house need to be vacuumed daily as well as the furniture vacuumed and you need air purifiers in almost every room of the house where the cats go. They CANNOT be allowed in your bedroom at all.
