Mold problem causing allergy?? |
I think I have mold in my new house and I'm getting these red spots on my face because of it. How do I get rid of the mold and/or find out where it is? It can't seriously be in the whole house. My basement did get flooded when it rained couple of weeks ago. Could the mold travel from the basement throughout the house? I've gotten allergy tests done and the doctor said the red spots are from mold ... My question: how do I get rid of the mold, how do I know how bad it is? How much do you think it costs (I live in NJ)? Will I need a professional for this or are there any home remedies? Please help me out! Thanks a lot!!! This calls for a bit of cutting and pasting. Just had a similar question, so before the mold alarms start going nuts . . . There is mold in every single home and certainly everywhere in nature. You may not be able to see it, but it is there. In your plumbing traps, central air, probably under your house too. It looks gross, but 99% of it is no more harmful than drinking a soda or eating a Twinkie. (Some people are allergic to those, too.) Some of it is very harmful, but symptoms are usually fairly pronounced even if not readily associated with mold. If you have mold and are feeling ill, tell your doctor but don't go running to the doctor for a full physical just because you find mold. Now, you have a diagnosis that indicates mold is a problem. It has to go. Did your allergist indicate what kind of mold was causing your problem? Different molds have different characteristics and different preferred environments. A bit of research may give you some idea where to look. If there are enough spores in the air to cause a problem, there should be enough mold to see unless you are very very sensitive. Mold can be black, blue, red or white. It can appear as a powdery coating or a slimy mess. A recently flooded basement would be a good place to look, especially if your symptoms started after the flooding. Check all exposed surfaces, especially any areas that are damp. If your basement is finished, the problem could be in or behind walls or under flooring. Central air units are also good growing spots. If you have any plumbing in the house that is or was leaking, that would be a good place as well. Tubs and showers should be checked, as well as under the rim in your toilets. Mold needs moisture to grow. Darker places are better than lighted places. The spores become airborne and can travel quite some distance. They will not grow unless they land on a damp surface that provides the appropriate nutrients for that particular type of mold. Once you find the mold, getting rid of it is not difficult. Dry everything out. If building materials are severely infected they may need to be replaced. Replacing drywall is usually easier than cleaning. Bleach with water will kill the mold, but you may need to treat it a few times depending. 1 cup per gallon for most surfaces, stronger for porous materials. You should note that the link posted earlier is to a company that is selling mold testing kits. I would be hesitant to buy a kit before you do a good visual inspection, but their cleaning tips pretty much fall in line with what I would do. See http://moldcheck.com/moldcleanup.asp... Turn the A/C down low and place a dehumidifier in the basement. once the wetness is gone so is the mold. probably one of the reasons for the mold is new houses always have moisture in the wood that you placed in the house so now it is being released as well as the rain, i would make sure your attic and crawl space is properly vented and use bleach and water to spray on any noticable spores, also ive heard of using lime on the crawl space floor.might want to get a dehumitifyer to pull the moisture out I would have someone that does mold remediation and inspections take a look at your house. They can take air and surface samples to test for molds. If you have central heat and/or central air it's very likely that this could travel from the basement to the rest of the house through the ventilation system. Good luck.
