Good dog food to help with allergies? Recently got a dog from a breeder - currently on Eukanuba -?

but he sneezes and itches alot.
p.s. are those dog treats with mint in them safe?

I would suggest California Natural:
"California Natural Pet Food

Cheap pet food ingredients, such as protein fillers, or even premium ingredients can be highly allergic to pets with sensitive systems. That's why California Natural dog and cat food refuses to use them in our production. In fact, we have the shortest ingredient list of any dry pet food and combine just one protein, one fat and one carbohydrate source to create a hypoallergenic pet food."

Eukanuba is a crap food -- as well as Pedigree, Purina, Beneful, and Science Diet .. basically anything from the grocery store.

Make sure you go to the vet though and make sure your dog is actually allergic to something in dog food. Will save you alot of time and money in the long run.

Where to buy California Natural;

Here is a site that rates dog food from 1-6 (1 being the worst and 6 being the best):

Solid Gold - Barking at the Moon is actually a 6 star food -- which is really good!

The mint treats would be okay for maybe 1 time a week. Don't over do it with them.

Hope that helps :]
With all of these recalls I have stopped using all commercial brand pet food. I recently hooked up with Flint River Ranch Pet Food. www/frrco.com/122135. Just my personal opinion but I recommend this pet food. No chemicals, no preservatives, testing for melamine every 15 minutes during processing. All human grade ingredients and all made here in the US nothing from China. There is no dead, diseased or dying animals grinded up in this pet food. All whole chicken, lamb and fish. I rescue and have 12 dogs eating it for several months now. These dogs look so good and shiny, I couldn't even describe it. I know that most of the commerical grade food including Eukanuba are being sued for mislabeling. A good website is Itchmo.com Pet News. You will find some interesting and not so nice facts about most of the commerical brand pet foods. Many dogs suffer your dog' symptons because of the chemicals and preservatives added to your dog food products.
I have rescued dogs and cats for over 30 years and I have never been more impressed with a pet food as I am Flint River. I am also a vet tech by trade and another vet tech from an emergency clinic turned me on to Flint River Ranch. A lot of show dog people use it. You will have to spend a little more money up front on the pet food. In my opinion you get what you pay for. You feed less of Flint River because it's healthier and it's delivered to your door for the website price, no shipping costs. I guarantee you that in the long run you will save on vet bills. I have never heard of pets not loving the taste and All of the people that I know that feed it comment on how shiny and wonderful their pets look in just one month of feeding it. Good Luck in your decision.
Talk to your vet first. There are a number of things that can cause allergies in dogs. We are currently going through the same thing with our dog. Our vet told us to go on a food trial (a very specific diet to rule out foods he may be allergic too) as see if it helps. Allergies in dogs is one of those tricky things to diagnose. You almost have to rule things out until you find something that works. I really wouldn't recommend making any changes to your dogs diet until you meet with your vet. A dog can actually develop food allergies over time so it is important that you talk with your vet so that you don't actually cause more damage than good.

P.S. yes the mint treats are safe. Don't use them as a substitute for good old fashioned brushing, but we give our dog DDS brand mints (kind of like giant altoids for dogs) he loves them and them help with the dog breath too!!
I would look into a raw diet, which is just meat, bones, and organs, so there's no possible allergens. Do your research. Eukanuba is not that great and many dogs are allergic to wheat. Could also be environmental allergy, don't bathe him too much or use fragrance sprays on him or around the house.

Mint is very good for your dog....and the best thing it keeps their breath fresh. But that doesn't mean that he can't be allergic to the mint or the rest of the ingedients in the treat. It may be the treats and not the food thats making him sneeze and itch. You should figure out the trigger.

Consumer reports have indicated that dog and cat foods that are advertised in papers and on TV are the worst form of nutrition as they contain mostly fillers. Eukanuba falls into this catagory...but not as much as let say...Purina or Iams. When purchasing food look at the list of ingredients. If they start with fillers they are the worst. The first items on the list should be chicken and rice or lamb and rice.

Also, purchase from a pet store that will let you bring the food back if the dog carries a reaction or just won't eat it. This is only returned with small bags of food.
It really depends on what they are allergic to. The allergy testing can be expensive but would be the best route. You can, first, try a process of elimination to rule some things out. (I once had a dog that was allergic to GRASS!) I would talk to your vet. The most common food allergy in dogs is corn. Typically, the order that "corn" appears in the ingredients on the food bag indicates how much it is made with. Never feed any that list corn as the first ingredient. I used to feed Eukanuba but have found the food that works best for my dogs (pug) allergies is Science Diet. He eats the Lamb & Rice, small breed formula. I'm not saying this is what your dog needs but you should try a process of ellimination.
Another common allergy in dogs is fleas. You can use the expensive products that kill 99% of fleas on your dog but if they are allergic, it only takes one tiny flea to drive them crazy.

I know the Greenies (for teeth & breath) are safe but I'm not sure about others.
