What food is the best dog food for a Labrador Retriever with food allergies?


Our lab suffers from food allergies and we are looking for advice on which products to try. Thanks!

Try Innova Evo or California Natural Herring & Sweet Potato.

Innova Evo is a high protein, low carb, zero grain food. Most dogs are allergic to corn, wheat, or rice products, and Evo does not contain any of the above. They have both a poultry version and a red meat version, in case your dog is allergic to either beef or chicken, you can always try the opposite one.

The California Natural (only use the Herring & Sweet Potato, the others are good but not for allergies) is awesome because it has very few ingredients and does not contain grains, chicken, or beef. (Most dogs who are not allergic to the grains could be allergic to domestic meats like chicken, lamb, or beef.)

Both brands are very healthful and do wonders for allergies. Give your dog at least 4-6 weeks to see a reduction in symptoms. If your dog experiences vomiting or diarrhea for more than 24 hours, stop feeding the new food immediately. Transition your dog gradually by mixing the two foods and gradually increasing the new food until that's all he's eating. Start counting weeks to notice the changes AFTER he's eating 100% new food. During this time DO NOT give your dog ANY treats outside of his food, because you don't know what he might be allergic to. It's best to find a dry food he's definitely not allergic to and let all his symptoms clear up before offering treats again, because then you can offer one type of treat at a time and see if he reacts to it or not. If you want to give him something extra, both brands sell a canned food that has the same ingredients as the dry, and you can feed that as a treat or mix it with the dry food.

What's dog allegic to? Some that are allergic to Beef or Chicken do well on lamb and rice.
