Has your dog ever had allergies?

My pug, Olivia, has severe allergies. The vet put her on a steroid/antihystemine (spelling?). Last night she had a really bad reaction to the medicine. I threw it out and called the animal emergency hospital. They told me I had to wait it out. How long should I wait til I take her to the vet? I'd prefer not to take her to the vet right away, but I don't want her to have a heart attack either. I'm not exactly aware of how serious or "not so serious" this situation is.

I have a spaniel mix that is allergic to 34 out of 63 things he was tested for. He never had a reaction to the medications he was on, but steroids are not good for any living creature. They shorten the life span if the dog is on them too long.

My vet had me take my dog to an animal allergist. This specialist is the one who tested my dog, found out what he was allergic to and started him on weekly injections. It isn't a cheap process to go thru, but he is now off the injections and only takes 2 children's fastmelt benadryl a day now. Glee is 11 years old and happy as a clam.

No good animal emergency hospital will tell you to wait out a reaction. That's like the emergency ward telling you to wait if you have one. Take your dog to the vet, find out if there is a specialist in your area and get it in to see the allergist. If there isn't a specialist in your area, see if your vet has any alternatives, sometimes they can to allergy testing with a simple blooddraw, then they can figure out what to treat with.

If you can, stay away from steroids!!! Source(s): personal experience
no because i don't have a dog why?:??????????????
what kinda of bad reaction did she have? vomiting or was it more of a heavy breathing? What was the allergy symptoms that the vet gave the antihistamine to treat? please give more info.
Take your dog to the vet. he could be suffering from severe breathing problems cutting oxygen to the brain. They should give him something to calm him down and definitey have him checked out. Here's something on canine allergies to better help you understand what may be going on.

"Ask a dozen health experts about allergies and you鈥檒l get at least that many theories about what they are, why they happen, and how to fix them.

What鈥檚 interesting is that even when they disagree, most allergy theories point to the same underlying causes. This is because allergic reactions are symptoms of a deeper imbalance. Dogs don鈥檛 develop allergies because they are exposed to allergens. Dogs are exposed to allergens all the time, usually with no reaction. Dogs develop allergies with implications of skin problems because something has made them vulnerable, and the culprit is often a combination of diet, stress, conventional medical treatments, heredity, and environmental factors."

My dog does not have allergies but i have heard alot of dog allergy stories. Most Allergies were linked to be caused by the food. But other causes could be the problem too such as flea, dust mites and pollen. Anyways, from what it looks like, your dog have food allergies. I'm not a vet so you should get her tested by a expert to see what she is allergic too. For the time being search for a hypoallergenic food source and use bottle water. Good Luck hope all works out . (it's spelled antihistamine)
