What can I do to make it possible to have a degu? Mom has allergies.? |
I have an opportunity to rescue a degu, but my mother is allergic to anything rabbit like. I don't live with her, but I am at her house everyday. Is there anything I can do to make it so I can have the degu and not make her sick when I visit? I've wanted a chinchilla for years, but have felt I couldn't have it and not worry about my mom's health. If you have any information that would help me I would really appreciate it. Thanks. I have two degus and my father is allergic to cats and long haired dogs. I think that if you clean the cage once a week, give it a dust bath once a week and keep the handeling to a minimum you'll probably be okay..... my father hasn't had any allergic reactions and he's held them before. You should also keep the cage in a bedroom so when she visits there won't be much residue in the air. Wash your hands exremely well after handeling your degu(s). My advice would be to not handle it before you go to your mothers. Make sure you shower and don't allow any hairs to be on your clothing. She shouldn't have a problem as long as it doesn't sleep on your cloths, or hairs in your hair...Keep it away from all of your coats, jackets, purses, etc. Any thing you may take over there. I wouldn't even tell your mom because she just might get nervous and start having reactions. But you can watch your mom when you go over to see if "you" notice any allergic reactions. well one thing you could do is not bring the degu to you mothers house or you could have your mother wear one of those mask things doctors use (cant quite remember what it is called) and if she cant touch the degu make sure you keep any fur off the floor or couch and what not.... -hope this helps! my mind? I would recommend washing your hands before and after handeling your pet. This is good for you, and, that way, your mom will be fine! I would also recommend changing clothes, even you have a chinchilla, or a degu. I hope that this helps! Thanks, and good luck! Minnesota gal here! Suggest that her doctor prescribe an allergy medication to her (only if she can tolerate it though). Some can be taken over-the-counter. Suggest that she wear a mask when she visits you. Perhaps there is a spray one can buy at Bachman's, Lyndale Garden Center, or even Home Depot that may help your mom. Also try cleaning it's cage as well as cleaning your degu. |
