Medic Alert ID bracelet for child with peanut allergy? |
My preschool-aged child has a life-threatening allergy to peanuts. The allergist suggested we purchase a Medic Alert ID bracelet for her. This would stay on her 24/7. I am going to get the ID bracelet for her, but just wondering if wearing it will ostracize her from other children her age. She is kind, beautiful, funny and smart - these are the qualities I want others to see in her, not her food allergy. Do you think wearing the ID bracelet will change people's perception of her? In the end, I will do what is best for her, to keep her safe and healthy, but I know reality bites. Thanks for your thoughts. My son is also allergic to peanuts and has been wearing his medic alert since before he was two. He is now 5years old and has had no reactions from other children or adults. The most that has ever been asked was what he is allergic too, other than that he is treated as any other person. My advice to you is to have her wear the bracelet and make sure that you educate her about her allergy. Make sure that she understands that she can't simply share food with other kids without asking an adult if it contains peanuts. I don't think that you need to worry about what others will think. People may see her medic alert bracelet but her funny, smart personality will never fade into the background. i dont think so at all...if so, it is just the ignorant people of the world...walmart has some that are very nice, also you can try your local jewlery store...they are making them now days where they are not so gawdy looking...good luck to both of you... In my experience, a person is curious about someone's medic alert bracelet for approximately a minute, or until they find out what it's for (I'm diabetic), and once they know, they never really discuss it again. Your child should be open to answering a question or two about it ("It says I have an allergy"). But long term, nah, it won't affect her daily relationships with people. People are just curious for a few seconds; once the mystery is gone, life goes on as usual. you are worried about what kids will think about your child because she has to wear a bracelet to save her life. did you ever think that maybe they will think its cool. who the hell cares what people think. you should be more worried about your child's safety. and what if the kids make fun of her, are you going to take the bracelet off her so they won't make fun of her? a medic alert id is to save lives, they don't care about fashion or teasing My son has worn a Medic-Alert since he was 5 years old. He's 17 now. He has never gotten a negative comment about it. Medic-Alert has even introduced a whole line of "kid-friendly" designs for the wrist bands. I do recommend going with the original nonprofit organization, rather than one of the many for-profit knock-offs. www.medicalert.org kids that age will have no clue what it is. I started wearing one at 10 and never had a problem. |
