Is anyone a caretake or a family member of a person who is or has suffered from Alzheimer's disease?

If so, what are some of the issues that you face?

Hello there,

I am not a caretaker of someone with Alzheimer鈥檚, but I work for Gilbert Guide, a site about senior care. In my time working for this company, I鈥檝e heard from many people who care for others with Alzheimer鈥檚. Here are some of the related issues:

鈥enial. When someone is newly diagnosed with Alzheimer鈥檚, a caregiver may refuse to believe the signs indicate anything more than low-grade memory loss. Grieving the diagnosis is very similar to passing through the seven stages of grief associated with mourning death.
鈥rustration. People with Alzheimer鈥檚 are often unpredictable and must be monitored so they do not hurt themselves. Caregivers need always be on their toes, much like they would with small children, to make sure their loved ones don鈥檛 put themselves in harm鈥檚 way.
鈥uilt. Caregivers of people with Alzheimer鈥檚 may find themselves occasionally getting short-tempered with their loved ones, and this can lead to overwhelming guilt.
鈥mpatience. It may be tempting to argue with the person or to try forcing him to do something he is resistant to doing. The best method is generally to avoid being combative, and sometimes this is far easier said then done.
鈥 general feeling of being drained. Oftentimes, caregivers feel they have to walk on eggshells around their loved ones to avoid causing any problems, and this can be exhausting.
鈥adness or even depression. Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer鈥檚 is a slow process of accepting loss. Spending great deals of time caring for someone who seems a shadow of the person he or she once was can evoke a feeling of emptiness.

If you鈥檙e interested in reading more on Alzheimer鈥檚, I recommend checking out the Alzheimer鈥檚 dementia category on Gilbert Guide鈥檚 blog. The blog covers Sundowner鈥檚 Syndrome, games for memory improvement, activity programs for people with Alzheimer鈥檚 and Alzheimer鈥檚 and sexuality, just to name a few topics.
