I thought I had PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). I had all the tests done. The nurse called me yesterday and said that everything came back fine but my testosterone levels are high. She scheduled me an appointment to go over it with my doctor next Friday. She said my doctor doesn't think it's PCOS. So what does this mean? What happens if I have high testosterone? No smartass answers please. I'm not turning into a man. High testosterone levels can be an indicator of PCOS but there's another condition that causes high testosterone levels that relates to the adrenal glands. This condition (and I found out about it from a show on Discovery Health called Mystery Diagnosis) is called non-classic adrenal hyperplasia.
The difference between this condition and PCOS is related to where the high testosterone is coming from. With PCOS the high testosterone levels comes from the ovaries. In Non-Classic Adrenal Hyperplasia the high testosterone levels are coming from the adrenal glands.
I would recommend consulting an endocrinologist (a doctor that diagnoses and treats disorders and diseases that relate to hormones) as well to see what they think about your high androgen levels.
Also, with PCOS, some women don't have the typical symptoms such as weight gain or acne. Some are of normal weight and have regular periods even though the levels may be high when it comes to testosterone. |
