Treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder?

I've been suffering from relatively strong social anxiety my whole life, and lately it's been especially disruptive to the point I feel like I need treatment for it.

I've tried counseling and therapy for it and while I'm in it it helps with my mood and perspective, but my actual anxiety has never gotten any better. With great reluctance I've decided that medication might be my best option, so I've just got a few questions.

Has medication worked for you? What does it do/how does it help? I mean, does every second thought and instance of over-analysis just go away and not happen or what? I don't quite understand what it's like.

Also, people seem to make a distinction/have a negative preference towards benzo-somethings. What's significant about them?

Beta blockers are used to dull the fight-or-flight response, but most people prefer not to take medication for this if they can help it. Here is a good alternative: if you go to a hypnotherapist they can combine deep relaxation with suggestions for feeling calm & confident. Just a few sessions can work really well. Make sure the therapist is properly qualified though.
