Advice about generalized anxiety disorder and kava?

I was diagnosed several years ago with GAD and took Lexapro and Xanax for a period of about 8 months. That, with therapy helped me tremendously. Lately I have been experiencing a return of my anxiety issues and I feel like I need to be on my medicine again.

Now here's the problem- I am insured and my insurance does not cover mental health. At the time I was on the meds I was on a sliding scale at the behavioral health clinic, but still managed to incurr almost $500 of debt that I only got paid off last year.

So now I am in between a rock and a hard place. I need my meds, but I CANNOT incurr that debt again.

I have been reading about Kava possibly being effective for GAD but I am afraid to try it without some advice. My family practice doctor (actually an advanced nurse practicioner) will not return my call about this issue- and if I went in for a visit my insurance will not cover it or the medicine.

I hope someone can offer some advice. I am thankful for your replies.

Coby, you are very coldhearted. For your information I am a 28 year old mother of a 4 year old and I am looking out for HIS best interest by seeking help for my problem. Which for your information was diagnosed by a medical professional.

Hey chicka,
I will ask my sister (also a nurse practioner) if she knows anything about Kava and if she doesn't I will get her to look it up and see what she can find out.
The mental health system in our country REALLY needs some work. Anyone who has had, or who has a family member with mental health issues, knows that it IS a medical condition and should be covered.

I know that XANAX is a very addictive drug, it's the only drug along with klonopin that really helped my anxiety...I've never been prescribed either one of the drugs.
My doc gave me Lexapro and Buspirone for anxiety, neither truly work at all, the Lexapro gives withdrawls that send shox through your head. VERY UNCOMFORTABLE
They are programs that can help u pay for the med's, I learned that doctors help u get addicted to drugs but dont pay for them..

I can tell you this much, medication is not the answer if you want to permanently rid yourself of GAD.

Have you tried Panic Away - http://www.cureanxietydisorder.com

Hope this helps...

Well I don't know how old you are but here's some advice. The world is a sh** place and if you go on feeling sorry for yourself like you obviously do you're in for more hurt than you know. Join the Army and do something for the greater good instead of crying over spilled pills.
