Anxiety disorder and fear of flying? |
I have been struggling with generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks for just over a year now. I have been seeing a therapist for about 6 months now and I have been slowly getting better and making progress. I am still absolutely terrified of flying though. I went to the airport last year to pick someone up and had one of the worst panic attacks I have ever experienced. I even had to cancel a trip home last year b/c I was so scared. I have to do a 6 hour flight this November for a wedding. I am absolutely terrified and find that I am starting to get panic attacks at night thinking about it. What I keep hearing from my psychologist is to practice yoga. Yoga that focuses of breathing can be helpful. Being able to apply the slow deep breathing of yoga in a panic attack is a skill worth having. It's a bit of struggle to get. Just practice breathing like that more often. yes I have both horrible panic attacks and I'm severely afraid of flying :( I went on a cruise last year and I was so scared to fly, I seriously wanted to back out of the trip but I knew my man would kill me. I probably smoke a pack of cigarrettes at the airport, I took lots of anti anxiety medicine, pain pills, sleeping pill, and had alcohol. very bad I know!!!! however were going again this year. I plan to just have a drink on the plane. I would talk to a dr and see what you can get. he may be able to prescribe you an anti anxiety for the plane ride. if your old enough to drink I recomend getting a cocktail on the plain!!!! also those motion sickness pills make you tired, I took some of those and slept most of my flight. also take a disc man or ipod or whatever. get a meditation cd. those help so much. good luck and you will be just fine!!! I was in the same situation and i was scared of flying and travelling. I did go to docs and took medicines but it helped me up to cetain extents but not completly. I was ok for some years but again it came back to me. Fortunatley i happenend to meet one of my friends who suggested me to try the panic away course. Initially i was bit intimitated to take up the course as i have already spent lot of money on this but he suggested "its ok you can take it " ""its ok you can take it " after all life is preciouse than money and spending money on something which gives you life is always good. SO i tried this course and i am fully recovered and i am living happily. I woudl suggest you to take up that course and you will be fine ever after |
