I need help dealing with social anxiety disorder?

sometimes im afraid to talk because i dont wanna say something stupid or weird. Its hard to be myself at parties so i fear going to them. Its not easy to deal with so i could use help. I feel embarrased to tell my family about it and ask for therapy and drugs so i just wanna know ways to deal with it on my own

I had social anxiety disorder and I then did an 8 week course to sort it.

The course was called MBCT / MBSR (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy / Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction). Within the first 4 weeks about 5 years of anxiety dropped away!

Check out Jon Kabat-Zinn, and try looking for courses in your area.

These practises are non-religious, but they do borrow from ancient Eastern spiritual traditions, however Jon Kabat-Zinn is an American guy who removed all the religious side, and made it more palatable for a Western audience.

Zinn has used these techniques in hospitals for anxiety and pain related disorders. I was recommended this course by a psychiatrist the modern medical community is now adopting it.

Good luck :)

Unfortunately, if you truly have social anxiety disorder (and not just shyness), you really can't deal with it on your own. It's a medical condition that needs evaluation and treatment from a mental health professional. (Don't be embarrassed, it's not something you can help. It's the chemistry of your brain).

However, if you're simply a shy person there are two important stages involved in any plan to overcome shyness:

1. Facing your problem head on
The first thing to do is think of small steps, smaller and less challenging events where you are having problems acting confidently. Gradually as you achieve these you should take on more demanding events and eventually in this way you will build up a list of successes which in turn will build up your confidence and bit by bit knock down your wall of shyness.

2. Build up your self confidence. (Insecurity is at the heart of the problem and you need to deal with this.)

Here is a site with steps on how to build self-confidence:

Basically, believe in yourself and your abilities and take small steps to face the situations that scare you. With hard work, you can start overcoming your fears.

Good luck.

No one wants to make a fool of themselves so it's a natural feeling. As a hypnotherapist I see loads of clients who suffer with anxiety and most of them have waited ages before doing anything about it because they felt stupid or thought they should be able to sort things out themselves. The mind is a complex thing and no one gives you an instruction manual.

There are loads of different techniques you can use to reduce anxiety and lots of people who can help you. I run teleseminars to help people reduce their anxiety because it's something that people can do from home and they don't have to feel anxious about them. An individual session with a therapist will always be the most beneficial but at least making things 50% better is better than nothing.

I have suffered for a long time with social anxiety problems. I finally had to seek professional help. There is no magic cure but i take some medications ,nothing too strong, that helps a lot. Dont be ashamed or embarresed this condition is as real as a disese. Many people have the same thing Find a good Doctor. and he or she can be of at least some help. Remember, nothing to be ashamed of.you're fine, just a little adjustment needed.

Hey there... well I suffered from severe anxiety at one point in my life and I seeked help. I started by going to therapy, and then BOOM they wanted to give me medication if I was not able to deal with it on my own. You have to understand that anxiety is mental. After I saw that the doctor wanted to give me medication, as I have an anxiety to medication as well i learned to deal with it on my own. I lerned to Relax.... breathe.... My advise to you is that people and rude and cruel, no matter what so who cares what they think about what you say or how you act. No one is perfect! You are you and that is great!!! One thing there has to be something that has trigered this anxiety. Think back and see what it could be. I would definantly seek therapy if you feel that you need it but I wouldn't take any medication. I hope this helps and good luck!

What I do when im feeling stressed is I take relaxation medicine. There are these great pills that are for people who want something without a prescription called Absolute Calm. You can take em during the day if you are feeling stressed or like an hour before you go to bed to help you relax and get a better night's sleep. A lot of people are taken back by medicine for relaxation because they hear about people abusing stuff like Xanax but I assure you, Absolute Calm is nothing too strong and is good for regular every day stress. I think you should try it out, here's a link:
