Could moving a lot during your childhood cause social anxiety disorder?

I have lived in seven states and went to four high schools and I'm only 19. Could this be enough to cause social anxiety disorder?

It most definitely could be the main contributary factor to forming your scoial anxiety disorder. There are a few factors that can cause this disorder: Biological- you can be born with a quicker arousal system that can contribute to anxiety disorders, Environmental- Unfair or over-criticism, scrutinization, children learn from parents so if a child speaks and gets unfairly scrutinized, they will be less likely to engage in social situations for fear of negative criticism, moving house has a huge effect when your a teenager because from the age of around 10-18 a lot of changes occur and teenagers try to find their identity by relating and responding to their surroundings and peers/friends. We learn from other teenagers what's normal behaviour and what's not so without a solid home life and a longstanding secure place to grow up, you will be bound to be left feeling unsure, not being able to relate to others your age, finding it hard to socialize etc. There are many good programmes and treatments for soical anxiety mostly based around the CBT model that are very effective

Absolutely. I have that situation myself. Our homes provide security. They shelter us from the elements and from the outside world. When we make a move, we are giving up known levels of security and trading them for unknown security. This loss of security adds stress as part of our brains now have to be on the alert for potential dangers. It may takes weeks or months before we feel safe in the new environment. If it is repeated over and over again, certainly an anxiety disorder can develop that may last for a long, long time.

I'm sixteen. I've lived in two states so far and have moved multiple times. I think it has affected me because I remember having a lot of friends before all the moving started. I've been through seven or eight middle schools, each time having to make new friends. Though the only few friends I have now are in Ohio and we keep in contact through e-mail. Sometimes I find it hard to meet new people, wondering if they're going to welcome me or reject me.
