Can bipolar disorder or other anxiety/mental disorders disqualify someone from the military/military academies

What are the chances?

I'm guessing that it won't keep you out of the military completely...but would it badly hurt one's chances at going to a federal service academy (Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, etc.)?

Yes, one can certainly not come into the U.S. Army/Academy per AR 40-501. Standards of medical fitness, army regulation chapter 2 physical. I perform military physicals. There is no way I would allow someone with biploar to get past me. Furthermore, that individual would not want to get past me. Basic combat training is psychologically very demanding. That individual would break in basic without medication. I guarantee it. Furthermore, that individual would cost the government money in terms of training expenses and would require a tremendous amount of paperwork and personnel to be processed into and then removed from the military. (An absolute waste of everyone's time starting with the recruiter and my time. I do not take this lightly. I encourage prosecution to the fullest extent of the law if someone attempts to conceal a pre-existing medical condition such as this.) We need personnel in the fight, not administratively working on jokers who try to hide things, get caught and waste everyone's time. Besides, it is an offense. It would be considered a fraudulent enlistment and the military could give a dishonorable discharge, which is equivalent to a civilian felony that would follow one for life and that individual would have to report when asked on job applications. Don't do it, don't think about it and don't encourage it. ~ Army Doc

You will absolutely be disqualified. You can not have a major impairment and be allowed in the military. My niece is bipolar and was denied last month.

Don't lie like the guy above me suggested, either. You don't want to lie to the government...they will find out.

Bi-polar disorder is disqualifying for entry into the armed forces as are other mood disorders. The source below is the medical standard.

OF course it can. You can always hide it until you get in then say you think you have a problem. The military and VA are all about pumping you full of drugs.

yes it will completely and forever.. BiPolar is a PDQ, no waivers authorized, for all five branches.

It can.

Yes it can. do ask don't tell.
