Generalized anxiety disorder. Anxiety medication with the least side effects?

Hi. I have generalized anxiety disorder with a dash of OCD (obsessive thoughts and counting). I am feeling much better from seeing my counselor for the past 5 months, but sometimes I still get very anxious. She wants me to get on medication, which I have been resisting because of the side effects. Finally, I am ready to give meds a try. Which ones have the least side effects? A couple of years ago I took Paxil and slept for a month, no energy at all, and I tried Zoloft, but whenever I would have even a bad day I would get crazy, let alone if I had a drink I would just scream and yell and break things. I DO NOT want to deal with those issues again. Does anybody have any personal experience on different medications good or bad? I would appreciate it very very much.

I have GAD too, along with some panic.
For a long time I was on Klonopin, and it works great, but don't take it, it's addicting and I had several weeks of withdrawals.
I'm now on Lexapro and Seroquel. Lex-10mg, Seroquel 25mg, both at night.
I was scared to try them, but now, after 5 weeks on, I am so gld I took the chance.
It took about two weeks to really feel the effects, but NO side effects. Nothing.
Only calm, peace, and a generaly positive feeling, and wow, I can sleep at night, thanks to the Seroquel.
I am SUPER sensitive to medication, but these two drugs have given me my life back. I was terrified of side effects, but that anxiety was silly.

What did your Dr. put you on? Email me. Report Abuse

I have been taking Prozac for years and it works fine for me. They put me on Effexor and it caused high blood presure. I am OCD and lately have had trouble sleeping. The Dr. gave me Ambian, DO NOT TAKE THAT. I was walking, talking, dialing phone numbers, eating and reorganizing my books without any knowledge. People have been known to do all those things and even drive and have sex and not know it. I am still looking for a sleep med, without the Ambian effects? Dyan

I had a good experience with BusPar, although it made me a little drowsy. Most of my anxiety happened at night and it really disturbed my sleeping, so it worked out perfectly for me to take at night.

I didn't experience any side effects other than drowsiness. (which is ideally what I wanted...so I could sleep)
