Can students with anxiety disorders or panic attacks usually be mainstreamed or do they usually need to be in? |
special education classrooms? I'm not the student, sorry, i should have specified. Just remember that the whole point of special education is to get a Free Appropriate Public Education in the LEAST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT. This means that if a child can be mainstreamed, then they should. If the anxiety disorders or panic attacks do not affect their ability to learn, then I don't see any reason that they would be segregated from their peers. If the anxiety attacks interfer with the student's learning or ability to be in class, then special education services would be very appropriate. Now, special education is either direct services or indirect services. Direct means that some of the classes are special education and some are mainstream (general classes), and indirect means that all classes are mainstreamed but a casemanager is available at any time for support (like if you had a panic attack, you could leave the classroom and go directly to that casemanager, who then would calm you down). The direct services would be appropriate if you get the attacks being around large groups of people. The special education classes would be smaller for your needs. It depends on teh student I have panic attacks and have ALWAYS been mainstream (actually I was advanced I was suppose to skip a few grades and my mother held me back to be with peers, and I was AP in highschool). There is nothing wrong with my brain that says I can not learn or be taught, I did not need my courses modified or be given 'special education' neither do others who simply have anxiety. the behavior issue is very important. Most students who suffer from anxiety disorders are usually in mainstream school. They do however require a lot of extra support and understanding from both teachers and other students. It depends on the severity of the condition, but generally they stay in "regular ed" classes. |
