Social anxiety can cause these feelings, which can also lead to severe depression,

There is hope; I've been there, and still am there, it is a long, hard struggle. I recommend
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/cognitive_b... worked best for me, with mild anti-anxiety meds. I suffered from social anxiety for over 15 years. I've tried individual therapy, and group therapy and studied psychology for 10 years, as a profession, but also with the hope to cure myself.

Depending on your comfort level, you could go to a psychologist that practices CBT and specializes in anxiety disorders, seek a group therapy, or create one. Usually those that do attend the group therapy are a bit more high functioning because as you know, it can be difficult to speak in a group.

Another idea is to see if there are any local research studies being conducted that you could participate in.

The program that finally worked the best for me is this one: http://www.socialanxiety.us/findinghelp.... and I was lucky enough to have a structured behavioral group to go along with it. Sometimes the people that actually attend this program come back home and form groups.

I recommend a mild anti-anxiety med in addition to CBT therapy.

Any questions, let me know ... I can't tell you how much this has improved my life!

It is an excellent website
under yahoo groups there are loads of them - social anxiety disorder is such a strong term . I mentiond I had that to my last counsellor last year and she challenged me and was right - I do not have that - I may be shy around certain types of places or people but that is a good thing for me a defence mechanism that protects me from them - I am outgoing and have very strong communication - I thought I had social anxiety disorder because I simply did not like going around certain places and being around certain people and that means I am picky or maybe a bit shy

If you have s. a . d then you will need alot of support for it cripples you from moving forward with jobs and dealing with certain types of people you have to deal with and finally with enjoying yourself and relaxing in ' any ' social situation that is a ' disorder '

like I said yahoo groups or just type it in with support next to it or club or group or network or help
I thought I had it before and did all of that and found lots of support - this was a few years ago mind you when I was still with my ex - now I am happy and strong and do not seek such places out yet I would still need help with the book I mentioned before ' mind over mood ' it is the best and full of excercises that will change your thinking and alter your patterns - I used it and here I am soaring in my career - dealing well with abusers and abusive people -
