My parents don't believe that i have social anxiety disorder?

can i go about this on my own?
i'm 16 years old and my anxiety
is getting worse. I feel that there
really is a way to make it subside
and i want to find it. Problem is,
my parents are not on my side.
They have seen me suffer through
loosing my best friend. they said
it would pass, but it's been 3 years
and i'm not getting any better.
besides, there is definitely more
too it than that. I don't know
where to start or where to look.
will you please help me out?

keepsondancing ; i use to think that it was a made up disease too. I thought that most everyone is uncomfortable in social situations, however i recently watched a youtube video about a girl that was telling her story about SAD and i started to realize that there was a name for what i was feeling. I avoid social events and situations. Don't go out, parties, movies, school events. Yes, i have friends, and when asked to go somewhere i make up excuses because i can't handle them. I avoid eye contact with class mates, look at the ground when i walk.. and i do it all purposely. its hard to explain, but it's not normal. i can't even order food at resturants without feeling uncomfortable. Even if its convienient for me i most likely will avoid it.

kill them. let them know you're making an effort

If they won't listen to you, ask them you want to see a doctor.
A doctor will listen to you. I know what it feels like to have an social anxiety disorder.. I have one as well. You can't keep things bottled inside that's for sure. If your parents won't listen to you at all, or they don't believe you.. sit them down and just say to them that you're not lying, and you really need to talk to someone. Ask them to take you to the doctors. You may need medication for it.. and it could get serious if you don't do anything about it. Because if you leave it untreated it may lead into depression... and being depressed and not doing anything about it could lead to things alot more worse.....

I'm a mental health professional who thinks this is a made-up disease. Sometimes drug companies push "disorders" so they can design a med for them and make still more profits.

Being shy or ill at ease in social situations is very common. I used to be one of those people. How did I get over it? I watched other people role model conversation for me. I observed how other people interacted and tried it myself. Eventually I became more comfortable and now I am bursting with confidence. Believe in yourself and get involved in Life!

P.S. Most parents truly want to help but just don't know how. They do the best they can, but sometimes you just have to work it out on your own.

That is something you will learn to get over, as you get older you will experience love, love lost, friends and family will die, i know it sounds sad but that's life you will adapt to these seemingly unfair feelings of life and understand it with god in your heart. the best thing you can do is take up a hobby, something you really like to do and stick with it, otherwise occupy your mind. im a parent and sometime its hard for me to understand my children but i want whats best for them and so do your parents, don't shut them out. Life is what you make of it, make it grand. good luck

I feel the same way! I hate getting haircuts because I don't want to talk to the person cutting my hair. I usually have my mom cut it (hah).

I'm starting to try and overcome my fear. What I'm doing is trying to look more confident, because it's more of the vibe people get from you than the words you are saying.

Do one thing a day that scares you. and tell yourself "people that mind don't matter, and people that matter don't mind"

I have social anxiety disorder. When I told my dad he freaked out on me and denied it. The truth is no parent wants to accept the fact that their kid has a problem. Have you researched the disorder? If you are certain see your doctor. He/she can diagnose it and treat it. Best of luck.
