I'm sure I have an anxiety disorder but I'm much too afraid to see a doctor?

I'm pretty sure that I have social anxiety disorder but the only person that I could get to take me to the doctor is my dad, and we don't get along. I don't feel comfortable with him but I'm still under the age of 18 (I'm 16) and I would need an adult. It's ruining my life and I don't know what else to do but to seek help and get medication...

Ok, my personal story about anxiety. Up until like... 11th grade in high school, I thought I had a serious anxiety problem. My face would always turn red if I was put on the spot, even just in casual conversation... I had so many problems making friends and I never felt comfortable in front of people. I'd start freaking out and not being able to breathe and such. It was really really really horrible, and I did talk to my doctor about it, and you know what he said? It does sound like you have a problem with anxiety and I understand that it's hard... but it's just nerves that you will grow out of. I'm not going to prescribe you some medicine that's going to make you a zombie, when I know you can over coming it yourself, just give it time.

At the time I thought, wow I hate my doctor. What an idiot. I really do have a problem... why doesn't he just help me? This is torture.

But you know what? I'm 21 years old now and I have completely, 100% overcome it. Why? Because I had to! No one was going to give me some stupid medicine to fix my problems when I could fix them myself. So I did... and it made me a much stronger person. I had to learn to love myself, learn to chill out, and learn not to take life so seriously.

If you really want medicine, fine, be one of those dumb people that takes the easy way out and never ACTUALLY overcomes their problem. It will suppress it forever and you'll always be stuck with this issue in the back of your head. I can almost guarantee you will grow out of it though, especially if you try. I am so outgoing and comfortable around people now... you wouldn't even know I'm the same person as I was when I was 12-16... or even earlier. It's just something you have to be patient with... and really learn to accept and love yourself.

Everyone has problems. Everyone gets shy and nervous (you just may not always notice it in others, and they likely don't notice it in you!) and EVERYONE goes through struggles... if you get past it though, you will come out stronger and smarter.

you could ask another family member to go with you and your dad.
doctors help. they prescibe things, they talk to you and help you out.
i had a friend that just kind of went crazy and they prescribed him xanax and now he's like a normal person haha
idk if that helps, i dont think you're crazy, but im just saying, doctors are doctors for a reason. and they make drugs like that for a reason. it wouldnt hurt to see a doctor.

Kari, first stay away from the meds doctor want to give you.
they make money from it.
second find someone that will just listen to your issues
until you start to realize that you really are normal, every one has problems. just start to let your feelings flow. again have someone just listen to you , acknowledge you without judgment or giving advise
you will find the answer within you.
you do...... and only YOU have the answer. you just have to find it.. and you will
gool uck
peace out

I have severe anxiety.
I was so hesitant to go to a therapist, but the longer I waited, the more I knew I needed to go.

Take my advice and go now, I look back and think of the many years of confusion and sadness I could have spared myself, and it makes me mad.
