My dad has dog allergies and asthma, is it possible for me to own a low to no shed/dander goldendoodle?

-My dad wouldn't ever really come in contact with the dog

Do you think your dad wouldn't really come into contact with the dog for 10-15 years? Dogs live a long time. And that's a long time for your dad to live with a dog if he has allergies and asthma.

You might want to consider smaller non-shedding dogs, instead of a "disigner mutt" goldendoodle. Those are just mix's, same as any other. Head to your local shelter, they'll have lots of dogs, puppies too! And will be able to give you a good idea of the dogs personality before you take it home.

first i want to say. that dog dander no matter the breed is going to be on your clothes, and every one else that your dad comes around. its impossible to keep it out unless he lives in a bubble or wears a mask constantly.

I know this as I also have allergies and asthma, and am allergic to both dogs and cats ..and own one of each.

Here is how i get around that allergy issue. own a breed that is not constantly shedding like most short hair breeds are (i own a Great Pyrenees)

She gets bathed often. with a baby bath that contains lavender and chamomile.

By using the baby bath (either Johnson's & johnsons Bedtime Bath or Gerbers Giggles & grins lavender) the pH does not drastically change as it would if you used a specific soap for dogs or even adult (human) soap / bath / etc.

plus im very allergic to anything else.

bathing every 3 wks breaks the cycle of the dander being allergenic the amino acids / enzymes do not get the chance to mingle and then are not producing the antigens.

Both my Great Pyrenees Service dog and my Bengal Service Cat get a bath 3 wks apart and i am allergic to neither of them. other members in my family are also not bothered by my dog / cat and one cousin is very very allergic to cats with it causeing major asthm attacks. she LOVES to snuggle the cat and get right into the fur for snuggles.. and she has no problems.

its has worked for me and people i encounter since my allergist checked into it back in 1982.

another note here. people that have never owned a pet. will test positive for having dog dander on their clothing. cause someone somewhere they came across.. had a dog and the dander transferred to them.

do you live in the same home as your dad?

If you do, then dont get one of these dogs.

Just because it has poodle in it, does not mean it will be low shedding/low dander. It also has golden in it, which also sheds like crazy and produces alot of dander.

If you want a dog that tends to be good for allergies, then seek a purebred that is that.. none of these "designer" mixes are guaranteed! Most of them have a coat that is a mix of both breeds.

You never can tell with mutts. There is no such thing as a Goldendoodle. You are talking about a Golden/ Poodle mix. True, Poodles don't shed a lot, but Goldens do. Why not just get a purebred dog that is on the "hypoallergenic" list? Shih-Tzu, Bichon, Poodle, Yorkie etc.

(Note that none of the dogs on this list will be COMPLETELY shed/dander-free. These dogs are just recommended for people with allergies because they tend to have a LOWERED shed/dander rate.)

Goldendoodle's & Laradoodle's shed and have dander, maybe you met people that have gotten one that doesn't, but the people I know that have labradoodle's all tell be laughing that they may not look like labs, nut the got the shedding gene, don't know about goldendoodle's but I would guess its the same, if you like big dogs, just get a standard poodle

No. The allergen is the dander from the skin, and all dogs have skin.

No such thing as a non-allergenic dog - that's hype by bad breeders trying to con you.

Bad idea. Trust me. Hypoallergenic dog is as much a myth as Lassie.
