I'm in the Armed Forces and I lied on my enlistment saying that I didn't have asthma, but now its acting up.

I am supposed to deploy early 09 and now my asthma is acting up and im very scared about what could happen while im over there since it is very hot. Should I contact my chain of command about this incident. I'm very scared even if you think trying to get medical discharge is best thing let me know any help is appreciated.

I hate to tell you how to "game the system," but here is what I suggest you do. If you can afford to do it, go to a civilian doctor to be evaluated. Explain your concerns and ask HIM whether your deployment could be a problem. Of course, you will have to pay out-of-pocket for your care so it doesn't get in your records.

Then go from there with what to do next. Whether or not you take that interim step, as I see it you have two options:

1. You can get into the military healthcare system and perhaps your asthma will be mild enough to not preclude you being deployed. Depending on your career field, that is a distinct possibility. If you are still in basic or tech school, could this recurrence be stress-related... just a possibility to consider. "Mild" asthma does not mean an automatic discharge.
2. If your asthma is bad enough, you could get a medical discharge or be cross-trained into another career field.

You don't say how long you've been in, but I'm guessing not long. If your true health status comes out, you will probably get a general discharge and if you got any sign-on bonuses, you'd have to repay Uncle Sam.

Hope things work out for you.

Edit: Scot's comment about not letting your military doctor know you have asthma is a good point. Play dumb and just describe your symptoms.

If you really want to get deployed, talk to your medic. The next time he orders medical supplies, see if he can order some albuteral inhalors (asthma inhalors).

Personally, though, if you are headed to Iraq I wouldn't go with a breathing condition. The sand storms kill your upper respiratory system, so it's only going to get worse while you are overseas.

I am in the military now. Basically you need to go to the medics and tell them you have asthma and get the right medications. YOu do not want to deploy anywhere near the desert, you may not make it back. Its hard to get a discharge in the forces nowadays, with the wars going on. Just go to the hospital and let them take care of you. Good luck on your deployment!

Contact your chain of command. They will get you medically evaluated. The medical authorities will then prepare a medical board report to recommend your general discharge under honorable conditions for a pre-existing disqualifying medical condition. Your re-enlistment code will be RE-4, which will bar you from re-enlisting or enlisting in another branch and wasting more of the hard-working taxpayers' money.

Aside from the obvious point of false enlistment being an incredibly bad idea, you have to keep in mind what is ultimately the most important - which is your health. To risk your health for fear of any type of negative outcome is a poor choice. You going to a combat zone when you are not 100% puts both you and your fellow Soldiers at risk.

You might not have done the right thing at enlistment, you should do it now.

Edit:
I find it interesting that so many answers basically tell the poster how to "game" the system or get over. For those of you that are Army connected, all I can say is remember those seven little Army value? Things such as INTERGRITY? or HONOR?

Go to your physician and tell them when you were younger you had asthma and you have been doing extra cirricular and you feel that it is acting up and ask to have them look at it. They may just give you meds/inhaler and send you on your way. Worst case your at least medicated before you go overseas.

this is exactly why you shouldn't have lied, go to the doctor, and if you are getting deployed and have asthma, tell the doctors at the SRP and you will probably have to show documentation, but you will probably be listed as non deployable

go and see the doctor, but dont let on that you are aware you have it.
asthma can develope in adults so youl be ok and they none the wiser,
just make sure you go on deployment and dont back out on your mates!!

go to sick call in the morning and get put on asthma medicine... they will work with you then, but you need to get on a inhaler... my husband has had his asthma act up and they put him on a inhaler... but his is not really that bad....
