Do I have exercised induced asthma?

Within 5-10 minutes when I get done working out (mostly after running) Left eye gets red and area around my eye swells like I just took a punch. My teeth hurt, and it's hard to breathe, and I wheeze, cough, and my nose runs. Claritin D solves all issues except my left eye gets slightly red. Symptoms only last about an hour. Does that sound like exercise induced asthma? Abuterol inhaler doesn't really do anything that I can tell. Want to get off Claritin D because it makes me shaky and hyper. Regular claritin doesn't solve problems.

I have asked my doctor and he told me it was exercised enduced asthma and I've taken advair, claritin, alavert - with and without D, claritin with and without D. I've used the abuterol inhaler about 20-30 before exercise with the clear extension tube thing, and the only things that helped were advair and claritin D. I can't really tell that the abuterol does anything.

It actually sounds more like allergen of chemical induced asthma. Which one predominates depends on the air quality of your town and whether you are excersicing inside or outside, at home or at a gym.

Claratin is a fairly mild third generation H1 receptor inhibitor, so the fact that this doesn't work on its own is not conclusive. The pseudoephedrine component may be enough synergistic effect to reduce mucus secretion in the lungs and "alleviate symptoms." Zyrtec is a more powerful version of Claratin and is now available over the counter. Try this and see if it helps as it doesn't contain pseudoephedrine. That would more strongly indicate allergen induced versus chemical (ozone or other irritant) induced.

With mucus formation, Albuterol may not be effective if you take it after the exercise. Try taking it 1/2 hour before exercise (2 puffs spaced 1-2 minutes apart). You may not be taking it effectively or inhaling two fast. In this case, an "inhailer chamber" may be of value. If Albuterol continues to not help, then your issue is not technically asthma.

Asthma is characterized by constriction of the smooth muscles of the lungs. Without this, there are other diagnosis possibilities and treatment options. These include inhaled glucocorticoids like Flovent.

I hope this helps.
