Can Anxiety/Social Anxiety Disorder cause asthma? |
My mum has very bad asthma, but I never had any problem with my breathing. Recently as my social anxiety disorder/anxiety/depression has gotten a lot worse, I find that I have extremely bad asthma. It's gotten worse. My mum went to the doctor and said that I have the same thing as her, so the doctor said that my mum can just give me the same inhalor she has, but I wonder whether it's my anxiety, I do feel anxious a lot. Asthma is a reactive airway condition that is physiologic in nature. It can be triggered by allergens, cold weather, dust, and yes! anxiety. If you have been diagnosed with this type of asthma and are questioning it I must ask if you have been given a formal pulmonary function test with a methacholine challenge. This is a series of breathing maneuvers performed on a machine. Then you are given a medication that will irritate your lungs on purpose and retested. After you will be given a second medication to reverse the effects and tested a final time. Only then will you known conclusively if you have asthma. If you have had this test and it came back positive and your anxiety is triggering it we call this intrinsic asthma. This means that your bodies hormones and adrenaline are stimulating the constriction in your lungs. You need to have a very serious and honest discussion with your physician as to your level of anxiety and make sure that you always have enough medication for both your asthma and the anxiety at all times. Consult with a Pulmonologist, you and your Mother! I have COPD which is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, along with panic and anxiety and when I get panicky and anxious,my breatheing becomes much more difficult! I believe you both should go!
