How do you know if you know if you have asthma |
how?? A doctor should conduct a pre/post medication, called a bronchodilator, pulmonary function test (PFT), in which a set of breathing exercises is conducted through a machine. The machine will then read the difference in before the medication and after the medication, put the ratio in a percentage and be deciphered and diagnosed by the physician. Each person has a different level of severity. Asthma is classified as a reactive airway disease and as such you will experience symptoms like shortness of breath with both activity and at rest. Most commonly at night nearing early morning. The shortness of breath can be triggered by allergens, strong emotions, changes in the weather, and exercise. Most times a person with asthma that is having difficulty breathing can hear a distictive wheezing sound oringinating from their lungs. This is because the lungs become irritated and the airways swell and constrict limiting the air flow, thus causing the sound as the air is forced out of the lungs through the narrow passages. Inhaler or nebulizer therapy with medications called bronchodilators are used to open the airways. Your doctor can order pulmonary tests to measure how well your lungs are functioning, however, the only true test to diagnosis asthma is called a methacholine challenge. During this test you can be given medication that will actually irritate the airways on purpose to measure how sensitive they are and at specific intervals you will be tested. Then you will receive the bronchodilator medication to measure the reversability of the response. When you breath in you sometimes feel like theres not enough space to get air through- it feels tight. Well I have had asthma my ENTIRE life, Usually doctors don't diagnose people until they are at least 2... however they knew right off the bat. |
