Does the Marine Corps accept people with asthma or people who have had asthma in the past?

I'm 16 and I really really really want to join the Marine Corps but I have asthma so I was wondering if I could join the Corps IN ANY WAY?

Asthma is a tough one, I'd say normally not ! Don't take my word for it, call a recruiter and know for sure !

Asthma is instant death.
You can however get a Pulmonary Function Test to show you don't have asthma despite "asthma symptoms" and get around it that way.

Edit: If you don't report it at MEPs and are confident you can get through 4/5 years in the Marine Corps without an inhaler, the above work-around is unnecessary.

Here is what the medical regulation has to say about Asthma:

d. Asthma (493), including reactive airway disease, exercise-induced bronchospasm or asthmatic bronchitis, reliably diagnosed and symptomatic after the 13th birthday, is disqualifying. Reliable diagnostic criteria may include any of the following elements: substantiated history of cough, wheeze, chest tightness, and/or dyspnea that persists or recurs over a prolonged period of time, generally more than 12 months.

If you have not had asthma since you were 13, you can still apply, just take your medical documents with you to your local Recruiter.

If you have had it since you were 13, there are tests you can take with your local doctor to prove you do not have Asthma any longer such as the Pulmonary Functions Test and the Methacholine Challenging Test. If you can prove you do not have Asthma and get it documented, this would help if you were to put in a waiver.

Good luck!

Prbably how bad is your asthma, I think during this war they will take you, my son has a heart murmur and really thick glasses and they took him. I wished they had not, he is on his 2nd deployment, there are other things you can do, such as go to school and become an FBI agent or something like that.

Yes it can stop you if its intense enough...
if you are able to pass all PT tests you shouldn't have problem!
Good Luck!!! =)

Asthma stopped me from joining the Air Force years ago. I think maybe it depends on how bad it is.

I'm sorry. no branch of the military does.

Yes, they do.
In fact... I heard Stephen Hawking just shipped to boot camp.
