Is swine flu a more serious concern for children with asthma?

My 2 year old has allergy induced asthma and breathing issues. Whenever she gets any kind of cold or flu it's 3 times worse than it would be for another child. Within a day we have to start throwing every breathing treatment we can at her just to fight back. Worst case, if my child were ever to get the swine flu, would she be in serious trouble? Would she more likely become a serious case?

I'm not going to say anything really concrete, but I have been told that if someone has any pre-existing conditions, they are going to have a more difficult time coping with H1N1.
This swine flu... it's still the flu, and you should be taking extra precautions, just because she is young and more vulnerable.

As a massage therapist, I can say that people with asthma are often helped by some muscle relaxation techniques. I've seen people come into the clinic who haven't taken a deep breath in 10 years find relief. I don't know if you've tried it yet, but do look into it. It might help her case. 2 year olds sometimes have a short window of patience for sitting still and getting a massage, but even just a short session or two with a professional could improve her breathing.

Sounds like panic setting in!! There's more chance of being run over by a car or hit by lightening than getting Swine Flu! I'm not worried and I have three serious lung diseases, ANY flu can kill me!

Unless you've just come back from Mexico, you're most likely doing more harm to your child with all that breathing treatment! Clean house, clean hands are the very best defence, too many medications can be very harmful.

Yes it is.Any child and any elderly people are at greater risk from the virus. You baby having asthma makes him just that much more susceptible.
But like they are saying, simply wash your hands much more frequently, avoid close contact with any stranger and especially any one with cold symptoms. Stay at least 3-6ft away from other people. This should help cut down the spread. Wash your hans thoroughly after using doorknobs,handles or other publicly used surface.
If you bite your nails now is a good time to stop.
Just be vigilant and your child should be fine.

Those who are most likely to catch the flu are equally likely to catch the 'swine' flu - Young children, old adults and those with weakened immune systems (including if they have a medical condition such as asthma). So far one individual has died in the US of the 'swine' flu - a small baby from Mexico. The same baby would likely have died had it caught the regular flu as well.

I would think so. Swine Flu is, Influenza A. The flu is an airborne pathogen. It can change (mutate) when passing it human to human. When the flu mutates then it is harder to fight back. If your child has troubles with a common cold or a small case of the flu then I would think it would be serious trouble to fight and win.

I was wondering the same exact thing , I have asthma & allergies as well and on top of that im pregnant and I can't take vaccines. Hopefully she will be okay ! Im hoping this doesn't break out even more because I was told I would be probably be hospitalized.

I don't know where you live but 4,000 people in Canada die annually from the regular flu. I wouldn't be concerned about contracting Swine Flu. And if by some rare chance she gets ill, take her to the doctors ASAP.

Illness is always a more serious concern for children (or others) with chronic conditions.
