Do calcium supplements have any effect on atherosclerosis? |
It is known that calcium and cholesterol comprise the characteristic plaques in atherosclerosis but are supplements at all involved in build of such plaques? Are there any interesting papers to support this? (This is not a homework assignment) yes Even though it may be reasonable to assume that Ca in the form of the oxalate and other complex salts may be involved in the macrophage phase of atherosclerotic plaque build-up it's doubtful that the supplements are involved. Most of the supplements owe their usefulness or mechanisms in circulation of bone deposition mechanisms, are soluble after administration or probably are excreted unchanged when administered in non citrate form to Gerd patients on PPIs, particularly if the diet in replete with magnesium and Vitamin D.
