What is biofeedback?

Someone said its good for my psoratic arthritis, what is it biofeedback.

Biofeedback is an device which senses eletrical acitivation of the muscles. It involves having a surface electrode placed on to the skin which is attached by a wire to the feeback unit. It is usually tied into some type of viual or auditory feedback to let the person know to which degree a certain muscle is being activated.

It is commonly used in physical therapy to help people train to use a particular muscle group that had been weakened. For instance, someone who is recovering from ACL repair may have some inhibition of the quadriceps muscle. Biofeedback can be used during exercise to help the person know when they are activating the muscle appropriately due to a beeping noise that is heard upon acitivation.

It also had a use in relaxation therapy...for the opposite reason, trying to learn how to "relax" some muscles which may be over used such as the upper trapezius. If you are over using some particular muscles, it may be helpful in your condition to learn how to relax them. Source(s): I am a physical therapist
Biofeedback is the use of monitoring devices that display information about the operation of a bodily function, e.g.; heart rate or blood pressure, that is not normally consciously controlled.
