Any sahm's with bipolar disorder?? |
Ok...so all stay at home mom's have moments when they feel like they are going crazy and want to run away. But how does a mom with bipolar deal with the anxiety and overwhelming feelings of taking care of young children when leaving for awhile is not an option and medication is not working? (SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE...trying to give a friend some advice!!!) Try these dietary supplements for now and then make sure your doctor prescribes a new medication: Omega-3 Fatty Acids Omega-3 fatty acid supplements, which occur naturally throughout the body, are currently being studied to determine their effectiveness in treating depression and bipolar disorder. These oils, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) can be found in shellfish, sardines, albacore tuna, salmon, canola oil, soybeans, flaxseed, walnuts, and wheat germ. They are also available in pill form. In some trials of people with depression or bipolar disorder, many people improved substantially on high doses of Omega-3 oils. Herbal Supplements St. John鈥檚 wort One of the most widely recognized herbal supplement for depression is St. John鈥檚 wort (Hypericum perforatum). This plant and its flowers contain many chemical compounds, some of which are believed to be beneficial in treating depression. It is not known how these compounds work in the body. One theory is that it may prevent nerve cells in the brain from reabsorbing the brain chemical serotonin, similar to the affect of some prescription medications, thereby relieving depression. SAM-e S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAM-e) was introduced to the United States in 1999, but has been widely used in some European countries for the treatment of arthritis and depression. SAM-e is a naturally occurring and essential substance in the human body. It is most concentrated in the liver and brain and plays an important part in regulating serotonin and dopamine, two chemicals which influence mood. If her medication is not working she REALLY needs to call and make an appointment with her doctor. Obviously if she is on medication, she has one. The only thing you can do is either offer to take her or offer to take care of her kids so she can go. Get grounded. Focus on something mindless and easy. When I am having a manic episode, sometimes I go for a walk, clean the house, my favorite thing to do is color in a coloring book. Yes, coloring sounds childish, but it is something that a person can do without a lot of thought and get immersed in. If she can try to use the children as a benefit, such as playing with them and interacting with them, rather than getting away from them, it may help to change her mind about what is overwhelming and what isn't. Interaction can be very helpful to get away from mania. I'm a mom with b-p disorder Being there is all that matters right now. My son was just admitted for an evaluation and I don't know when he'll be coming home. Try to support her as much as possible. At this time she needs all her friends and family to help. If she's left alone she'll only get worse. I only hope the best for any one with a mood disorder. Good Luck |
