No, Bipolar Disease is a chemical imbalance of the brain and it can never go away, but it CAN be effectively treated with a consistant regimen. Many people really LOVE the High they feel when they are in the Manic part of the illness, that is why so many people stop treatment.

No, probably not if the bipolar symptoms started in adulthood (most common). If the diagnosis is made in childhood we don't yet know enough to say if the child will outgrow it or if the symptoms will attenuate with time. As the earlier poster mentioned, it is possible to control the mood with lithium or with the anticonvulsants (such as depakote).

One thing to note, though, is that bipolar disorder is one of those things that is pretty over-diagnosed now-a-days. So make sure that the person you are asking about has a thorough diagnosis. Often people who are moody are diagnosed as bipolar, when perhaps the better diagnosis is hypomania or
