Would you befriend a person with bipolar disorder?

Let's say if you didn't know they had the disorder to begin with and later on it's revealed whether it be just saying it or experiencing a manic or depressive moment. What would you do?

I have a friend for several years now who is bipolar. When she is "normal", no problem. When she is down I remind her that she is just ill right now and all the stuff she usually enjoys will be there waiting for her when she comes back to normal, which she will. When she is manic, I listen to her and laugh and kid around as much as I can, but I put a few limits on her, like how many times and at what hours she can call me and remind her that she is just a little ill and to go take a walk or call the crisis line and talk to them when I am not available. My friend is not psychotic ever and is not ever dangerous, so this is how I deal. Hopes this helps.
YES...there are medications to control the symptoms and if a person with BI POLAR has a support team they are more likely to respond to treatment...besides can one ever have enough friends?
I have bipolar disorder and so does my mother. Most of my friends don't know. If I were to find out that a friend has it, I'd let her know I have it too and I'd keep on being friends.
lol you act like this person has some contagious disease.. come on bipolar is very common I know several ppl with this illness its basically just depression with ups and downs and while taking meds you would never know they have this disorder. Oh and you say a manic or depressive moment... It wont be like that your frined will not be normal the just flip out for no reason at all and if she does she has something much more serious than bipolar.
i actually have a very good friend who is bipolar and she sometimes goes through her manias which are hypo and she goes through her depressions which can be bad. but she is a great friend and i love her. she is a lot of fun and a really good worker. when she has her moments i just try to talk her though them and she does good she also takes her meds. sometimes when she is depressed one thing with her to do is to leave her alone. however she is in a relationship and has kids so she is not alone. when the person is alone it might not hurt to go over and check on them and make sure that they are ok. but yes you can be friends with them. they make great friends. hope this helps
Yes, my best friend is bi-polar and I accept her and would anyone no matter what. An illness does not make a person who they are. Just as if someone had cancer I would not turn them away...I would want to help them and if they were my friend already I would be there as much as possible to support them. I am sorry some of your "friends" have not stayed beside you. This has happened to me in the past and they claimed it was because of my depression and oh how it hurt but I have since come to realize it was their loss and I now know who my real friends are and who they will be from now on. I only want people in my life who will accept all of me. I figure they were not my friends in the first place. I am sorry you have been hurt. Please know that there are a lot of people out there that really do care and some just don't care to understand but that is in no way your fault it is theirs~
I'd love to, because then we'd have something in common. It can be hard to watch someone go through something so tough, especially when you've had similar experiences, but it's nice to have someone who understands what's going on with you. I'm bipolar and I haven't lost any friends because of it. I mainly get depressed, though, which worries my friends, but doesn't scare them away.
