Has anyone here been diagnosed with bipolar disorder?

I just was. curious about the experiences of others... the way the doctor found out, is my old doctor gave me welbutrin and i got really sick... it completely took away my sex drive, forced me into a manic episode but was giving me mini seizures that presented themselves as dizziness and spacing out, so i was so exhausted that it just manifested by way of extreme anger and irritability. the other doctor kept trying to give me other meds to counteract it and they made me worse... my liver and lymph nodes ended up swelling, to where it seemed like mono (still doing a mono test just in case) but i'm now on seroquel at night, and celexa during the day, supposedly i'll be feeling better soon. any one care to share personal experiences with bipolar disorder, welbutrin, etc?

hi- first of all i'm sorry you have this. i have it but mostly i get the manic episodes. i have not been depressed in 6 years. but my last manic episode was 6 months long and just recently ended. I just graduated college and i wonder how will i ever get a life with this. for me the doc has had a hard time finding a med that works for me. Be patient and work with the docs because sometimes it does take a long time to find the right med. NEVER take welbutrin- that happened to me too- a very intense manic episode. I will never take an anti depressant period- I'm scared of them now. I wonder- maybe ask your doc why they arent treating you with lithium. this is the most common one used for this disorder. That drug worked the fastest and most complete. I just cant stay on it for maintinence i cant handle the side effects. Mean while read all you can about it- ask the docs lots of questions- and listen to your body. mine told me loud and clear when a med was wrong for me.I also researched any meds they wanted me to take- i needed to know how effective they were and if there were dangers in taking them long term. Also- i have researched this a lot and was in college for psychology and had acess to lots of knowledgeable people and found out the sleep is CRITICAL. If i stay up all night i am almost assured i will have an episode. Also during an episode sleep will help it go away faster. For this i use clonipan at night and during the day to take a nap. These are things that have worked for me- of course i'm not a doc. Also there is bi polar 11 and 2 diorder and rapid cycling and something called hypo mania. so ask them which one you have so you can reseach info and help yourself. Information is power. Good luck and be well.
I can tell you that finding medicines that help can take time and really be frustrating. BiPolars are tough to treat because we often fight the doctors and stop taking medications. When you go through a manic time you feel great and refuse medication however mania can be dangerous and expensive. I have Bipolar 2 where rather than mania I get hypomanic which is anxiety and frustration and useless energy.

It often takes a month or two before you find medications are working and often you don't realize they are working because they are supposed to make you feel normal and you forget how horrible you felt before.

The illness is not fun but it is something you can learn to live with. Find supportive people to help and learn to trust someone who can see problems starting before you do.
