Should the psychiatrist treating someone with bipolar disorder advise them stay away from alcohol and pot?

Should the psychiatrist treating someone with bipolar disorder advise them stay away from alcohol and pot?

"I don't know" is correct: he doesn't know. Drugs and alcohol does NOT cause bipolar disorder. Some with bipolar disorder self-medicate with drugs and alcohol and this is not the appropriate way to cope with bipolar symptoms. Most people with bipolar will require medication and therefore should stay away from street drugs. Persons taking medication should consult with their psychiatrist before drinking alcohol-some meds may counteract with alcohol and of course if they don't alcohol should always be consumed in moderation. Good luck. Source(s): Mental Health professional
