Is Effexor & Trileptal a good combination to treat BiPolar Disorder? Should I take Lexepro like my doc wants?

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder & have been taking Effexor for > 1yr. After trying several meds, I was finally put on Trileptal in addition. Now my doc wants to switch out Effexor for Lexepro (which I have heard is good), but have found nothing about any of these meds being used for bipolar. Not to metion the withdrawal pains I am having while I am weened off over less than 2 wk period. I AM IN PAIN NOW and feel like I am losing the grip I had. I was doing great for a few months and now feel like everything is upside down and I don't know who or what I can trust to give me the right meds.

Im so very sorry. I too have been in the up and downs of medication . You no sooner feel a lil better and they switch med on ya. I am actively on Lexapro. I tried to get off but can not. And boy do I know it when I miss a day. It may not be a true Bi polar its is very hard to diagnose. IT seems like a classic statement the drs make when they dont want to see out further info. Grrr

The Lexapro does work. In conjunction wiht the other meds perfectly well. Alot of it has to do whit our own thoughts and how we can find relaxation in this crazy world. The dr treat the symptoms but not our spirits..MEds cover- the rest is up to us. Be well.
Effexor needs to be cut down very very slowly - I doubt two weeks are enough. Many people have problems stopping this medication if they do it too swiftly, but for some reason the doctors tend to deny it's an issue!

If you are not happy with what your doctor is suggesting, then seek a second opinion - this is your right as a patient! I think that might be your best bet. Meanwhile, tell your current doctor about the problems you're having in cutting down the Effexor. If he dismisses this, remind him that over 13,000 Americans have now signed an online petition to the makers of Effexor, regarding the withdrawal issue.
As far as the Effexor goes, it seems to me that y'all haven't had very good luck with your doctors. My doctor warned me to NEVER skip a dose. I went on a trip for work and didn't take it for two days. Man, was I freaking out! I went to see my doctor a week later and he said, "didn't I tell you to never miss a dose? The withdrawel symptoms are hell."
I've taken both Lexapro and effexor, and for my symptoms (bipolar with anger mania), the effexor is better for me. But, this is not about me, it is about you. You should be able to speak to your doctor freely about what you want. If you think you'd be better off with the effexor, tell your doctor you want to stay put. But if the Effexor is not giving the results you are looking for, maybe you should listen to your doctor. Is your doctor a psych or a gen Dr.? Mine is my primary doctor, but he talks with my psycologist (I don't want a psychiatrist; they like to experiment on bipolar patients) to make sure what he is giving me is good enough.
The weaning process for effexor is harder for some people than others. Just make sure you have someone there with you at all times to avoid hurting yourself, or can call your doctor in an emergency.
