When was the date when they started diagnosing people with Bipolar Disorder.? It's hard to give you a direct and solid answer since there had been those in history who had noticed a correlation between mania and "meloncholia" (depression). Since records were not well documented or even documented at all, we cannot fully be sure. Here is an article on bipolar disorder. If you scroll down to the section titled History of Bipolar Disorder, you will get a good idea of what you're asking and also see the reason I say we can't be sure. :) It would truly depend on your idea of who had the first case. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/bipolar_dis... im not sure but i do no its a difficult one to diagnose. jus read that drugs can vanquish (get rid of) a lot of creativity that ppl with bipolar seem to have i think you have to google it My guess would be the 30's or 40's. Bipolar Disorder was previously known as Manic-Depression. Way back when,..in the old'en days they called it the Melancholy. But treatment really started in the 40's. Lithium was the only choice for a mood stablizer. Psychiatric drugs as we know them just didn't exist. Doctors just didn't know what to do with people who had Mental Health disorders and many became permanent residents of Sanitariums. If the family couldn't afford such treatment, many people unfortunately ended up living on the street. Usually in early adulthood is what my pdoc and therapist told me. It is usually diagnosed with depression or ADHD or both until adulthood, but the symptoms of my son who has been diagnosed with ADHD are exactly like my bipolar symptoms, he is 16 and I am 36. I was misdiagnosed from depression to bipolar after 7 years of being treated for depression. I think it just takes awhile for a pdoc to get to know a patient before deciding a life changing diagnosis so serious. :-) DLL Me They say Pablo Picasso had in the 1700's or what ever that time was...was it back then or did the post date it? |
