Is there anyway I can be positive that I am bipolar disorder? |
A year and a half ago my parents suggested that I was bipolar. I went to a highly reknowed PyschoPharmacolgist. I filled out a ton of forms and the Dr. said I am Bipolar. My "symptoms" include severe depression, horrible money management skills, and poor decision making skills. No Manic episodes. I am a recovering alcoholic sober for 3 years. For the first time in my life I was fired in February. Due to performance issues. I have a problem with my memory mainly that I don't have one. Also, I can't concentrate or focus. I take six different meds and I don't feel like they are doing me any good. I feel like since I was diagnosed BP and started taking all of these meds that everything has gone down hill. I know you aren't a doctor. I just want to hear your thoughts. Is there anyway I can find out that I definitely am BP or not? Has anyone felt "normal" after being diagnosed? If you do feel normal could you tell me what meds you are taking email me at Zanneyk@yahoo.com. Well, if you feel like your meds aren't helping you, then perhaps you need to go back to your doctor and tell them that you don't feel your meds to be working. If they don't do anything about it, then perhaps you should seek advice from another doctor. Perhaps you need to alse be in weekly therapy sessions also- if you are not already. I really do hope you will go to the doctor for some advice. By the way- congrats on being sober for three years- Its hard work. I hope everything works out for you. Were you this unhappy when you were still drinking? I would see another doctor for a second opinion. Actually sounds more like adult ADD and depression, but I should warn you I am not a doctor. Could the depression be attributed to the loss of your job or other current situations in your life? Anyway, even if you choose not to see a new doctor, please let your current doctor know that the meds are not helping you and you feel like you need to be re-evaluated, evenif its just for the purpose of deciding which meds would be more helpful. Good Luck to you. The best way to know is to talk to your psychiatrist. Also let whoever prescribed the meds know that you don't feel like they're working. I doubt that anybody really feels "normal" after a diagnosis like that. It's like being diagnosed with AIDS. You know nothing's ever going to be the same again. But people with worse mental disorders than yours have lived fairly normal lives, so don't feel too bad about it. I was diagnosed as being bipolar myself. I was put on several meds and they made me more suicidal. I started exercising, trying to spend more "alone time" to work on my stress, now I'm only on one med I have "graduated" my counselor and not going to a psychiatrist anymore. I found that my problem was rooted in my past and the counselor helped so much along with God. I don't know if you're a spiritual person or what your beliefs are but I read a book by Joyce Meyer called Beauty to Ashes that helped me also. Good Luck to you and may God bless you. it may be that your med need too adjusted,...I am bipolar 2 with schizophrenic tendencies I have been to point my melds way over doing i followed docs orders. well I went to see my concealer for my weekly visit I didn't know what was going but be for I knew she was calling for the paramedics because I couldn't walk my hands went totally out of control everybody around kept saying I hadn't did anything wrong.got to the er,they ran MR "s and such.the P doc came to see me and change my melds .what happen it was to wellbtrin and Prozac that made me shake and forget things that s all I need was a med change ..much luck to u it is very hard for people listen to and if you need help walking in ER and say you need a The Pdoc nothing else tell them you want be evaluated. the best way to know for sure is get a calendar and write down how you feel in a happy or a sad face. put a few words about your day if you can. You will see a pettern after a while if you are bipolar manic depressant. see you have a mood disorder that swings from the right to the left instead of staying in the middle at neutral, it goes to the depressed and then back to the happy side...a little too much in each direction... You are normal and do not feel you are different because there are many people and many just do not feel like telling anyone. alcohol actually can make this happen because the alcohol can make your mood swing one way and the hangover makes it go the other way. drugs also can throw this off. then again many people try to medicate because they know they are a little unhappy and do not know why. remember this is a popular diagnosis right now and like all the other pharmaceutical companies... they push to get everyone on the medication so the psychologists make money and the doctors have regular bussiness...it is a big money making racket! try to see about the St. John's wart. a natural suppliment that may be all you need to fight depression and the manic side is sometimes great even though you may get a little too Happy to suit the shrinks... many people like the energy and the productivity of being a little manic. many of the drugs are very hard on your body. they can affect your kidneys and make you not think clearly. Concerta is a drug to ask about because you focus more and remember more and it is a slow release and does not make you feel wierd. everyone is looking for the magic pill and the doctors are encouraging it too becasue their wallet grows fat. there is no magic pill and maybe no medicine can make you be good at managing money and responsable...if you get suicidal you need to tell someone immediately but if you are not going to hurt yourself, I suggest you try hard to control impulses. Many people are bipolar and do not even know it and they do well because they know we all have our shortcommings and this makes us human. recovering from alcholism is hard and you are strong and brave and responsable for being able to do that. give yourself some credit please. seek support from others who are recovering but be careful of people you can not trust who will try to pull you back into thier hell of addiction. take time to relax and refocus your mind and spirit. exercise and get the endorphins flowing to make you feel good. you are mentally alert when you run and exercise. don't dwell on the feelings you have that you are inadequate as a human because that is just not true wether you are bipolar or not! |
