Can drinking coffee adversely affect someone living with bipolar disorder? |
Can drinking coffee adversely affect someone living with bipolar disorder? Theoretically, it could exacerbate the mania aspect of the bipolarism -- may make insomnia worse, may make the patient feel more rapid/hyper/racing. People may notice an even more pronounced irritable or agitated affect. I not to sure on it, but I would ask a doctor or a pharmacists. Well, if your on the manic side, you usually have quite a bit of extra energy anyways; so drinking caffinated beverages (coffee, some teas, soda) can add to the energy and make sleeping near impossible which will effect your mood and general life. Drinking a BIT of coffee shouldn't affect much, just watch your intake and know your limits and it should be fine. Caffeine causes headaches and headaches can bring on the depressive half of bipolar. It's caffeine. I haven't read anything on cafeine affecting bipolrism. Do you notice it when you drink soft drinks...if you don't then I would say "no". it's the caffeine. my doc told me to be careful of my caffeine intake. so, ask yer doc. You are suposed to limit your caffeine ntake when you are taking litium, other than that I have heard nothing about it. I drink tons, so if someone knows for sure it does please let me know, sure... the caffiene can be a catalyst for mania. |
