Do people with bipolar disorder sometimes runaway?

my wife left 8 days ago and we have not heard from her since. we have been together for 20 years and have 3 children. lately her bipolar condition has been getting better and i have been getting better at helping her deal with it. our relationship and her relationship with her kids has gotten better, so why would she leave? she left me a note saying "chad i'm sorry and i love you i just need some time to myself , idont want to be with anyone dont worry about me i'm o.k. i love you" she wrote that in ink , then on the bottom of the page in pencil she wrote "it's not you it's me! i love you". so what i'm asking everybody is that normal bipolar behavior to just want to get away from the ones she loves the most? please help me!

to kj, my wife was diagnosed about 3 months ago . but she did not tell me about it , i found out through a casuel conversation with her mother. since then i have been going to her doctor with her and trying to understand what shes going through. weve been together for 20 years and i would do whatever it takes to get her back. i support her 110 percent so get the facts before you run your mouth. and by the way she is also an alcoholic so shes dealing with alot.

She said Chad I'm sorry. Which means she is gone. You might be better off at this point.

How sad, you should at least find out if she is safe and OK. It sounds like she loves you and the family. I think its very sad for you and the kids.

I would look for her because I have heard people with this disorder can harm themselves and not think logically at times. Maybe she came off meds? Call her Dr. and call police to locate her. you can find her by tracking cell phone and credit cards etc. HOw very sad and confusing to the children -- if they are very young I would make sure they have a care giver with them at all times. Good luck

Well yeah, we can't take stress. I am bi-polar, and even though my boyfriend is the most amazing guy in the world I always try to leave him. I even think of things he could be doing (even though I know he isn't)..

Try posting in Mental Illness for replies from people more knowledgable with bipolar disorder.

I've not heard running away was common for bipolar people, but when manic no telling what they may do.

She might just be confused right now. Bipolar or not sometimes people just need space. This does not sound that uncommon. If she was off of her medication then she would probably doing something a little more out there. Just give her some time. But if you are really worried about her report her as a missing person. I wish you and your children luck.

it just blows my freakin' mind to see people who has bipolar spouse don't know one crap about the illness.
if your kid has leukemia, wouldn't you find out everything about it? so why is bipolar disorder any different?
Y!A is the last place you should be, if trying to find out about the illness.
see, it's people like you that is the core issue. it's about you. it's all about you. you never gave two craps about your bipolar wife. She left you... boohooo... so now it's affecting you directly because you don't have anyone to fold your underwear. no, stop it, it is all about you and i applaud your wife for dumping your @ss, whether she did it with clear mind or not. IF you really loved her, YOU would have studied all about bipolar disorder when SHE was diagnosed, NOT when she does something that affects YOU directly.

YOU were never there for her and now you cry cuz SHE is not there for YOU anymore. were YOU ever really concerned about HER illness? ever?

1/3 of people who has bipolar disorder die from it. no, it can never be proven because they die in form of car accidents, drug overdose etc..

go learn about the illness NOT to get her back but UNDERSTAND the world she has to live in, day in and day out. UNDERSTAND the illness, not to get your wife back but chances are, YOUR kids may be flirting with BIPOLAR DISORDER as well. it is hereditary.

and after that, get 'An Unquiet Mind' by Kay Jamieson.

read it and learn it.

i dont know why but i do know that she will have manic periods and high periods....maybe this is a manic one and she needs to be by her self.... dont worry to much im sure she will be back once she works out her self

It is quite common for them to run away, but 8 days is a long time you may want to try to find her because not matter what she said she is not OK.

bpd manifests differently. however, it would not be unreasonable to interpret her behavior as a manifestation of her disorder. very little about bpd is normal, and sometimes ther behavior can be hard to interpret-other than as a manifestation of the disorder. you and your children need professional therapy...focus on the part of your family that is present and available.

I guess its possible. Have you called her Dr.?
