What illegal drugs don't mix well with people who have bipolar disorder(medicated and unmedicated)? |
This is educational, don't answer with things like, "All drugs are bad" and crap like that. Just give me a straight answer. I am bipolar, been on and off of meds for years, and self-medicated with marijuana for 20 years. It was helpful in keeping my mania in check, but horrible when I was down. And sometimes would interract with certain meds I was on, such as anti-psychotics. As for meth or cocaine, those drugs induce mania and delusions, and if I dabbled in those I always stopped taking my psych meds. PCP can induce mania-like symptoms to a great degree and is quite dangerous for a bipolar. LSD is a bad one too, as it can trigger psychosis, as someone else has already mentioned. As for ecstacy, this can cause mania-like symtoms also, but also the comedown can be tricky. The only one that ever seemed to not have an after-effect was shrooms. I've never done "K" or "GHB" so I am not too sure about those, but from what I know about them, I would imagine they would not be drugs a bipolar should experiment with. Never did heroine, but from I have seen that is bad news all around. ALL illegal drugs. Hate to say it, but "all drugs are bad"! There are no illicit drugs that are going to mix well with bipolar disorder. Drugs are usually one of two things -- uppers or downers -- and bipolar disorder can be affected by either one (bipolar disorder is characterized by dramatic mood swings and, guess what, dramatic mood swings are a side effect of every illicit drug I can think of at the moment!). Someone with bipolar disorder should avoid all illegal drugs, or else risk bringing on a crushing depression or crazed manic session, neither of which is something anybody with bipolar disorder is going to want to risk instigating. There are no "safe" illicit drugs for someone with this disorder. Sorry -- it's not crap, it's simply a fact. I'm a medical librarian. I would think that all of them with the exception of pot. But it too causes a chemical change. In my personal opinion it would have the least harmful effects. I can tell you this though stay away from meth. It really doesn't mix with bipolar, in fact I believe that it can cause bipolar disorder. But this is all my personal opinion, so take it or leave it. I don't think any drug will mix well with bipolar.. i mean they are all either uppers or downers.. downers would just make things a hell of a lot worse and uppers... well coming off them would make things worse.. so sorry to say that all drugs are bad.. so stick with chocolate People are right. Uppers can make you manic. Downers can trigger depression. Psychadelics are probably the "best" bet. There's still a chance they could trigger psychosis, which occurs with severe mania sometimes, too. I'm bipolar - stablized on meds - and 'shrooms were fine. My friend smokes pot and says it stablizes him better than any prescription he's had. Take that with a grain of salt, but that's my experience. |
