What do you think of when you hear the term mental illness, or bipolar disorder? |
i would like to know what people think about bipolar disorder, and what kinds of images the term brings to mind. I would really like to get people's opinions, and there are no wrong answers. please be honest. thank you. I will probably be belittled but in today's world I think many times Diagnosis are made that are wrong. And far to many Pills are being pushed only to help keep these "Psychologist" employed. However if you feel you have a problem go for the help. There is nothing wrong with going to a Doctor if your in true need no matter if you have a broken arm or a broken mind. I question myself to see if I have it. I was asked my first year of college by a quack if I thought I had it. It scares me to think I might. I can go from one polar end to the other in 2 seconds flat. But I"m also a 'dramatic' person. It scares me to be real honest. My friend had bipolar and she was GORGEOUS, and she could never see it. She shot herself during one of her 'episodes'. Sad really. But I can't help but think that she's no longer living with that horrible disorder. i think is is perfectly ok to be diagnosed with these terms. but unfortunately most people disagree with me. in to days society you are protected. you have total anonymity. no doctors office can release any information re; you with out your permission first. now if you attempted suicide that is a different story, it may cause problems in the future obtaining health insurance or life insurance. When I think of bi-polar disorder, the first thing that I think of is the skyrocketing rate if diagnoses of that illness in the country. The second thing that I think of is whether this sidden increase is caused by issues in the workplace and increased stress levels in general or is more of a Placebo effect due to overglamourization and publicity for the illness. I have been diagnosed with it, so the term has some significance to me, but I don't let it bother me. Fortunately I don't get depressed, just manic and I don't need meds to control it, but I believe I am one of a very few. i am not but i am borderline personality. a friend of mine had a girlfriend that was bipolar, so supposedly she was really bad but i wasnt. i got a response as if i had said i have a mosquito bite. try to explain what you are truely going through and your best friend, basically thinking you are a little un happy, but god forbid you have bipolar disorder then you are really in trouble. anything else is just so-so. not knocking bipolar i am saying just from experience. Bipolar Disorders can be misunderstood especialy with children. Alot of times it is wrote of as a behavior problem . I have a son who is 14 years old and was diagnosed with adhd at 6 years old . When puberty hit, it then became bipolar whch falls into depression , racing ideas and impulsiveness. Far as school systems are concerned there is a very big lack of knowledge with bipolar. Alot of school do not want to deal with it and its easier to write your child off as a problem. I have found that our educational providers are not always trained to know how to redirect properly. A bipolalr child cannot help themselves it is an illness. Really not any different than cancer, or other related diseases. Education on bipolar is important, these kids have rights also . Sometimes if your not making head way with school systems you can get a child dvocate and make sure there is a proper plan in place for your child with the school. Good luck to all that have had to ordeal what I have. Its not easy. The most important thing is ...Have a good doctor and take your medicine and make sure its the right medicine. Sometimes it takes several tries to find the right medicine. but most of all...follow through . |
